Dammit, I loved the guy in everything I seen him do. Watching him in A Bridge too Far as Lt. General Brian Horrocks is a joy. Mesmerizing in The Day of the Jackal. Despicable as Reginald Dyer in Gandhi. Definitely my favorite actor "off the beaten path"
Fox met the real Brian Horrocks while he was researching ABTF and the became lifetime friends

Isn't he exactly the same in every flick?

Besides JACKAL -- favorite role is in THE DRESSER.
He plays the stage actor who thinks he's too good to be helping with the props during the 'King Lear' raging storm scene -- but then just can't help himself and joins in anyway (Finney playing 'Lear' is still dissatisfied -- claiming the roaring sound effects were no louder than a healthy fart).

Haven't seen him in much but in addition to The Day of the Jackal and Force 10 From Navarone (where I probably saw him first) was a cameo in a 1991 Robin Hood tv movie as King John.

He made the most of his late blooming success. Whilst I'd disagree he was exactly the same in every film, his CV doesn't suggest he fought very hard against type casting as stiff upper lip authority figures... but he did offer some range and variation over the years. Two good ones not yet mentioned THE SHOOTING PARTY 1985 - absorbing look at British class system on the cusp of first world war - Fox is (predictably) the Lord of the Manor with James Mason (in one of his last roles) Gielgud, Tutin and Cheryl Campbell adding ballast. The DOWNTON fanbase will lap it up. with Cheryl Campbell & James Mason A MONTH IN THE COUNTRY 1995 - gorgeous Italian location work (the lake is Lake Como) big asset to HE Bates adaptation - this one set on the eve of WW2 - with Fox as Expat Major enjoying friendship - or possibly more? - with visiting spinster Vanessa Redgrave.... until younger, flirtatious Uma Thurman proves to be a fly in the ointment.... With Vanessa on Lake Como. The one to avoid most is probably WILD GEESE 2 - which would also be Lord Olivier's Sank No Deeper for anyone collecting them (Trust me - it makes THE BETSY look like an achievement of the order of REBECCA or WUTHERING HEIGHTS)

It’s too bad that Jackal didn’t make him a bigger star. He was really good in that.

I just saw him days ago in Johnny English Strikes Again (2018), reunited with his Never Say Never Again (1983) costar, Rowan Atkinson.
