Pretty telling how 40 years and nine movies later (10 if you include that 2008 Clone Wars one), this is still widely considered the best Star Wars movie.

Maltin Movie Guide Review:
The Empire Strikes Back - 4 out of 4 stars
"Smashing sequel to STAR WARS manages to top the original in its embellishment of leading characters' personalities, truly dazzling special effects (which earned a special Oscar) and nonstop spirit of adventure and excitement. Story threads include a blossoming romance between Han Solo and Princess Leia, the cosmic education of Luke Skywaker (by the mysitcal Yoda), an uneasy alliance with the opportunistic Lando Calrissian, and a startling revelation from Darth Vader."

I saw that on my birthday in May 1980. The ending cliffhanger was annoying.

Did you know about the Luke's father reveal going in? Oh no. And I didnt know who Yoda was-I was expecting a black-bearded Oliver Reed type sitting on a throne in the swamp.

Catman fondly remembers seeing this in the theaters with Catwoman. Those were the days. I was 9 years old when I saw it at the theater, still remember how amazing it was on the big screen. Everyone leaving the theater saying "Vader said WHAT?". God, they should have stopped after Return of the Jedi.....

I saw it in theaters but a year later (in 1981). I still remember that we walked in late -- it was already at the scene where Luke was training with Yoda on his back. I always thought that this film was an '81 release, but I later found out the '81 screenings were a re-release.

It is the best (and darkest) Star Wars movie. Every act and sequence is enjoyable and well put together. Darth Vader is at his best here.
