Robert Duvall had a strong reputation in television and theatre. In Robert Mulligan's 'To Kill A Mockingbird' (1962) he'd appered like a ghost, muted, faded and anemic. He worked with Francis Coppola on 'The Rain People' (1969) and they then made 'The Godfather' (1972), with Duvall playing Irish lawyer Tom Hagen, consigliere to an Italian-American mafia family.
Sidney Lumet needed to cast the role of high-powered executive for 'Network' (1976). He'd met a lot of executives who were tough, disciplined moneymakers, ex-military guys who were staunch Republicans and all about business. He saw something in Duvall that looked perfect for the role.
'Sidney Lumet cast Robert Duvall as Frank Hackett. Duvall saw Hackett as a "vicious president Ford". On Duvall, Lumet said: "What's fascinating about Duvall is how funny he is."'
