I know most say the book is better than the book, but I only read non-fiction, and most of that are biographies..
And the one fictional book I read will never be made into a movie (Catcher in the Rye)

These books are tough sledding:
Ben Hur Last of the Mohicans Wizard of Oz
Agree about The Godfather, but I am loyal to Tolkien's text.
An alternative thread: why don't they just film the book as is?

I'll second The Last of the Mohicans. What a slog that book was.

Not a movie but a mini series i think Wives and Daughters (1999) is better than the book Wives and Daughters written by Elizabeth Gaskell who died before she finished the book, Frederick Greenwood wrote the last section of the book.

Jaws is a definite answer.
The Godfather is a tougher one, the book is very good but the movie is great. Tough call.
One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest could be a possibility, the book is fantastic, but the acting in the movie is sooooo good.
Depending on how you view things, The Natural is a good answer. The movie is great, the book is a much different story. If you love Hollywood type endings, the movie is better. If you like more realism, then the book is better.

The Godfather was an good novel, bu the movie wisely cut a couple unnecessary subplots that weren't needed

The Godfather
Also thought the movie Shawshank Redemption is better than the novella.

Jaws, but the novel is actually pretty good, the movie is a masterpiece.
The Godfather is a mediocre novel
To Kill a Mockingbird is a very good novel but the movie is better
2001:a space odyssey, consistently makes lists for best SF novels ever but I think it is an average novel, the movie is fantastic
The Shining, I think Kubrick topped King

"Soylent Green" is much better than its source novel, "Make Room, Make Room".
