Chesney Hawkes is the greatest singer songwriter who ever lived! I can't vote because I'm not familiar with his work. Good thing you didn't ask the same question about Bob Dylan. As a songwriter he's awesome. As a singer....well....maybe it's best not to go there.

As a singer....well....maybe it's best not to go there. I always say the same thing about Dylan (my favorite popular music artist ever), but it really depends on how you define "good singer." If being a good singer means being able to hit a lot of notes in a lot of different ways and always sound pretty/beautiful while doing it, then, sure, Dylan's a terrible singer. But if you'll also allow that good singing is about effectively communicating the story and emotions behind the lyrics, then Dylan is one of the best singers ever. It's what Sam Cooke explained to Bobby Womack when Womack said he didn't get Dylan, and Cooke said (paraphrased): "from now on it's not going to be about how beautiful the voice is, but it's going to be about believing that voice is telling the truth." Dylan became the voice of a generation because it always sounded like he was speaking profound truths, even when he was mumbling surrealist BS or just imitating old folk stories.

That's a valid point. I define a good singer as one who doesn't make me put my hands over my ears when he's singing. I wish I could say that about Mr. Dylan, but I cannot. The most tolerable singing I've ever heard him do was for that song Don't Think Twice It's Alright. It lacks the usual irritating squeaky door hinge quality that characterizes his singing voice.

I don't know if you've heard any modern day Dylan but he doesn't sound much like he did in the 60s. His voice is very old and grizzled now, and he's still making awesome music:

People have told me over the years that I have a pleasant singing voice, but I'm the first to admit that I can't sing. Rather, I do an imitation of singing, not unlike the celebrity voice imitations that I do. Maybe they're not professional grade, but they're not total junk either.

Nah, I completely understand why many people can't stand Dylan's vocals. I've just got to the point where even though I appreciate beautiful singing, I can also appreciate very UGLY forms of singing like death metal growls and even whatever the hell this is (vocals start at about 1:50). You're lucky if you have any singing ability, as I very much do not. At all. What little musical talent I have is pretty much concentrated in my guitar playing, though I can play some bass, piano and drums on the most basic 101 beginner level.

I must confess that I'm not very familiar with your work either. Mostly I remember you throwing jabs on other people's threads on the Politics board, before I was banned from there, of course.
