He's convinced it's real! He chirps and barks at the screen, and tries to "find" where the dog will show up.
Aww, I love him.

I once had a peck-a-poo that loved watching basketball and would bark at horses on TV. He barks at the real horses when we drive by them. And the sheep (I think he thinks they're furry dogs!)

Some years back, I was watching a nature program on tv. My cat, who was paying absolutely no attention, suddenly had his eyes glued to the screen when some footage of lions appeared! As soon as that scene was over, he walked off. I thought that was really funny, and wish it had been during the time when I could have taken a video of it, because I thought that was just too cute.

Another cat freaked out when she caught sight of her reflection in a mirror that had been set against the wall at her level. Went total Halloween Cat with arched back, raised hair , huge tail. Poor Maggie !

Poor Maggie ! I've heard it said that one 'proof' of animals having no sense of self-awareness is that they pay no attention to their own reflection in a mirror. That's not true, and it's also not true that the only reason they do so--when they do--is that they think it's another animal. I've seen both cats and dogs react to their reflection in ways that seem to be pretty clear that it occurs to them that the animal they're seeing isn't a different animal, but themselves.

amyghost Those two times are the only personal experience I have had with cats and TVs/ mirrors but there are plenty of videos that show that some react as if they know it's themselves and some react to the other . Individual variations abound and all pretty interesting to watch !

I can't watch a nature show when one of my dogs is in the room. She watches the screen and starts barking if she see's certain animals. She's even went behind the TV and poked her head around to see if she could find it. It's hysterical.

He'll be laying on the floor, I'm convinced he's asleep, and some commercial or something comes on with animals on it and he jumps right up and he'll go so far as to look behind the television to see if that cat on the screen eluded him and snuck back over there. lol
