Did you buy anything? Do you want to go back soon? Do you think you will go back soon? Did the animals look happy?

It has been too many years. Catman and Catwoman used to visit zoos often back in the 90s and would spend most of the day wandering around learning about the various animals. Favorite zoos include the Brookfield Zoo, the Henry Doorly Zoo, and the Minnesota Zoo.

It must have been three or maybe four years ago. The Toronto Zoo had a family of pandas on loan from China so we made the trip there (about 5 hours each way) over a long weekend. The pandas were not the only reason for the trip but they were definitely the main motivation for it.
How long were you there? Several hours. It is a nice, big zoo which I had never visited before, so we figured that we might as well make the most of it and see the whole thing.
What animals did you see? Lots of them. All the main ones were there - elephants, giraffes, lions, tigers, hippos, bears, camels, gorillas, various monkeys.
Were any of the animals very active? The pandas were - at least the young ones. The adults, not so much. It was a joy to watch the two siblings playing. The other animals, some were, some were not.
Is the zoo you went to nice? Yes, it is a nice one, very spacious.
Did you eat anything while you were there? I don't remember specifically, but since we were there for several hours, we must have eaten lunch there.
Did you visit the gift shop? Did you buy anything? I am sure we did, but I don't think we bought anything.
Do you want to go back soon? Do you think you will go back soon? With the exception of this one occasion, this was the only time I went to a zoo in the past twenty+ years when it wasn't for the benefit of a child. I don't think it is likely that I will go to a zoo again soon unless I am in need of something to do with a visiting child.
Did the animals look happy? The young pandas definitely did. Some of the other animals, I guess so too. But I remember thinking that the tigers looked miserable, and I remember feeling depressed while looking at them.

Did you buy anything? Do you want to go back soon? Do you think you will go back soon? Did the animals look happy? I have fairly ambivalent feelings about Zoos. I like open concepts zoos, or sanctuaries a lot. I hate caged animals zoos, especially where there are animals that are not near extinct and are not natural to whatever the clima there is. Like polar bears in hot countries in small areas, exposed to a lot of sun, with no ice/snow around make me super sad. That being said, I do go to Zoos fairly often, those that I research are viewed as animal friendly or are doing important conservatory work. I cannot remember which one was the last one, I am guessing it was the Macao zoo or a Night time zoo visit in Malaysia. I went to see the Giant Pandas in Macao, and that was awesome, they seemed fairly content, well taken care of, plus there was a group of them, cubs and big ones, so it felt like they had friends/family there with them. I stayed for a couple of hours. In Malaysia I went to an open space zoo at night, which was an incredible experience because they made everyone shut up and not use phones or cameras or anything, and were pretty strict about it, and you would ride (electric, quiet open car) through the safari and listen to the sounds of the nocturnal animals and eventually saw some too, but the atmosphere was something like I never experienced in any other zoo. no voices, no screaming, no phones, beautiful. I would go back yes. even though at one point i was scared because some of the animals were very close to us and since it was a safari experience it felt like if they Wanted to, they Could interact with us and who knows how that would go. especially if you hear big cats roar at night and it doesn't seem that far from your open car its pretty chilling. In South Africa I went to a Monkey and Elephant Sanctuary near Cape-town. It was a day trip and I felt great about the monkey sanctuary. Free space, no cages, areas where you simply couldn't go just look, maybe there was water between you and the monkeys, but they had SO MUCH space. Some of the monkeys were still used to being around humans, because they were kept as pets or circus animals before and abandoned or taken away by authorities since they were being abused, and one even INSISTED on wearing a hat as that was something the monkey did for most of its life (apparently) so it was interesting to see how they do/do not adapt to more freedom and the guides were great and everybody seemed very animal loving there and the animals looked super joyful. And the goal of the sanctuary was to rehabilitate the animals for normal life in nature EVEN though not in a complete wild since its unlikely they would make it but at least here they had lots of space and freedom. So that felt like a good cause and organization. But the elephant sanctuary was a bad idea. First part was good, just looking at them and listening to stories about elephants, but then they brought 2 of them closer to let people touch or even feed and lead them, and I am somewhat ashamed I did take part in it, wouldn't do it again, after reading up more about it. I guess that should be a big part of the prep for everyone before they visit. To ensure that they are supporting a good organisation and not contributing to animal abuse, even if it doesnt LOOK like abuse, it could be.

I think "zoos" in the "traditional" sense, such as cages, are so depressing and sad. When I think of sanctuaries and preservations, that definitely makes me much happier. I went to a "zoo" only once as a little kid and even then, I just felt as trapped as the animals did. I used to live on a 300 acre farm that was also private land and marked off, reserved for wildlife that we maintained with no human foot traffic other than our border path for maintenance, not even to disturb the ground or plant life. I loved it.

I'm pretty sure the last time was in 2011. We went to the Columbus Zoo, which is probably one of the better ones in the nation. Almost immediately after we arrived it started pouring rain. We had to go to the shop to buy an umbrella since we came unprepared. After hiding under a bridge for some time we eventually toured all or most of the facility. I recall seeing some large cats, perhaps some antelopes, a rhino and the like. They seemed to be keeping at the maximum distance they could from humans, which seemed reasonable to me. We also toured the aquarium, which was pretty decent, but not in the league of the New Orleans zoo.

When was the last time you went to the zoo?
Summer 2015.
How long were you there?
A few hours, I guess.
What animals did you see?
Lots. Lions, tigers, elephants, chimps ornagutans, hippos, rhinos, etc.
Were any of the animals very active?
Some were.
Is the zoo you went to nice?
Yes. It's a lovely zoo that has been extensively redesigned over the last 20-25 years and the animals have a lot of space. The apes live on islands and animals such as giraffes, zebras and rhino are kept in a single, large open compound.
Did you eat anything while you were there?
Yes. I had my dinner. Chicken.
Did you visit the gift shop?
I don't think so, but am not 100% sure.
Did you buy anything?
No.
Do you want to go back soon?
Someday. Not for a while though.
Do you think you will go back soon?
No.
Did the animals look happy?
Eh, they looked fine to me.

While it’s been some time that I’ve been to the zoo properly, it must be over 20 years, I have seen some zoo animals since then.
In my town there is a walkway which leads over the local zoo. You could walk by the tiger compound and see the tigers underneath your feet. It was pretty cool. Sadly this is not the case anymore, a couple of years ago the tigers were relocated. The walkway still exists, but that part of the zoo is now devoid of animals, there is only an open-air restaurant there.

I visited the Central Park Zoo last summer with a friend. It’s a fine little zoo, though the rainforest building was almost unbearably hot. Saw sea lions, primates, lots of birds, grizzly and polar bears…
Most interesting animal was a snow leopard because we went to the exhibit and couldn’t see anything, so everyone else around us left, but my pal (who’s in veterinary school right now) told me to wait a while, and sure enough right from the corner of the exhibit a snow leopard started slinking towards us, oh so gingerly. It was a great sight, so of course it was ruined when crowds rushed back to the exhibit and the leopard ran off. Gah.
Yes, the animals seemed happy. I can’t think one of that didn’t—at least, other than that snow leopard when he saw all those people.
