During the quarantine I have gotten kinda Health obsessed and now I am trying to lower my salt contents. Yes I knew too much salt is really bad for you but never measured it before. The FDA recommended daily dose is no more than 2300 mg. The ideal being 1500. And I would like to do no more than 1500. I do read labels and track it, but man, is that difficult. so much salt in everything. And then I tried low sodium bread and thats just so bland. But I am sticking with it. But unless I am really really strict with myself its so easy to go above 2300, closer to 3 K even on a healthy food diet (nothing fried, no chips, crisps, anything like that, minimum to no processed foods) Do you measure or know how much salt you eat daily? If not, try it for a day or two and see. Its eye opening, if you do it properly. whats your experience? Anybody successfully detoxed themselves of too much salt and got over the salt "addiction"? I know sugar is even worse, but that I kicked some time ago and it doesn't bother me to go without any added sugar for weeks at a time. But salt, salt I miss a lot. Cheese is probably what kills it for me. And putting garlic or lemon on things as recommended, doesnt really do the trick

Since I started having problems with my blood pressure I've tried to keep my salt intake down, but I don't measure it. I've never been one to heavily salt foods I eat, so I already had that going in my favor.

Yes, I'm aware of that, and I do try to at least limit my intake of sodium-intensive foods. And I'm lucky enough to have people around me to give me advice on what I should be eating.

I am sure it's more than what's optimal as food without a fair level of salt would generally have no flavor.
but as far as my salt intake... I never actually measured it but I would assume it's a moderate-to-higher amount (but probably nothing too crazy either) assuming we use the OP's 1500-2300mg as the standard/average/optimal-ish range. because just checking one thing I eat here and there a moment ago, by the time I add in additional stuff it's probably around 4000mg+ of salt and that's just one meal. but this is not something I eat every single day (although I do once in a while) and, from my best guess, is probably one of the higher things I eat in terms of salt in a single meal.
but I am not worried much either way because my blood pressure is generally around normal (i.e. 120/80), give or take as even a moment ago checking my blood pressure it measured 107/73. but at times I have seen it float around 130-140/85 or so but it's probably not there for all that long before returning to around normal (i.e. 120/80 give or take). I am also not fat as I would say I am normal weight but closer to skinnier than heavier side of things... 5'7" @ 140lbs (maybe 145-ish lbs), which makes me smaller than most guys (so while I am likely weaker than most guys from a strength point of view I am willing to bet I am quicker than most though to especially considering my age and I don't get any real exercise etc). which is not bad as back when I was in my prime and had energy to burn, say 16 years old or so, I was same height but weighed 125-130lbs and that was not far from 25 years ago.
so all-in-all... my best guess without looking into it too much I would guesstimate I am probably somewhere in the 3000-6000mg range on an average day give or take a bit.
p.s. personally I am not too worried about what I eat as I feel I could be much worse and I am at a normal weight (if not a bit more slender than heavier) but I do need to get better at getting more consistent with exercise as I suspect that will eventually catch up to me if I keep on slacking as I have not had any real/consistent level of exercise in probably around 20 years, or a good 15-ish years at least. although I have gotten in a decent walk here and there over the years (I walk at a brisk pace, probably at least 3.5mph-ish and I believe I floated around 4mph here and there given my mile walk times etc in the past and I can tell I walk faster than most people in general when at grocery stores etc).
Exactly. which is why I would not worry about it too much as I suspect most people will blow over 2300mg in a single day. but unless someone is going crazy with the salt it would probably not be a issue unless one happens to be more sensitive to salt and has high blood pressure.
but realistically... I wonder what would be more reasonable for the common person to stay around without having to really watch what they eat? ; say 3000-3500mg?

But even that is hard to do IF you eat processed food or cured meats. For me tracking sodium content really has been eye opening and very informative. Like there were things I simply didnt realize were high in salt, like pickles or seurkraut which I love to eat and which on its own is quite healthy. But it can mess up your sodium levels big time. Luckily my sodium levels/blood tests are in range, so all is good there, but I dont want to count on it staying that way forever, I would rather make some changes while I am still younger and get used to it so by the time I am 60+ and Really need to watch it, its not such a big difference.

Far more than any wheit person I know. I'm not afraid of salt and sugar. Sorry, but as per my categorisation, you are a white person yourself. As for the topic, I think I consume very less quantity of direct salt. Can't say how much salt I consume indirectly but I add very little salt to food in which you are supposed to add salt. I don't know which foods contain sodium so I don't know how much I consume sodium.

I try to watch my sodium because cardiac disease runs really strong in my family. I don't salt my food, but you're right, anything processed, even bread, will put you right up there. I try to eat a lot of fresh/whole foods anyway, just to keep me at a healthy weight, but any kind of condiment like hummus, yogurt, etc. will increase the salt intake. I've been trying to minimize dairy so that may help. I should do an actual count for a week and see what I get. I probably won't like it, lol.

I don't know which foods contain sodium so I don't know how much I consume sodium. thats the trap of salt, its automatically added to pretty much all processed foods so the sodium content is fairly high on its own already without u having to add extra. do u eat processed or cured meats? or anything pickled? btw this is in no way to scare people, most people under 40 years and under 27 BMI dont have to “fear” sodium... but as we age, it becomes a different story even if one remains in good shape and weight, so its a good thing to occasionally think about I think.
