FINCH DIED? NOOOOOOO! Oh c'mon. This isn't what you meant about losing characters is it?
Not Finch! NOT FINCH
Wait, wait, not Finch. They played it all back differently. So John died? JOHN DIED? In Samaritan's grenade explosion?
And Root just got executed by Samariton?
No wait, all of these are simulations? I'm getting so confused now. But the flashbacks to Finch teaching the machine various chess games is helping me understand how the machine runs simulations in its mind to determine best case scenarios.
Next time I should wait until the episode is over before posting, huh? But this show is so good I get all wrapped up.
Disclaimer - This is the episode If-Then-Else that you were talking about, and I have to say that thus far, it's my least enjoyable episode. I really don't like it at all. Our of curiosity, what was it about it that you enjoyed specifically so much about it? This one, and that other one with Dillinger have been the only two I disliked out of all four seasons so far.

I liked the way it visually portrayed exactly how the machine thought - I do a fair amount of computer programming myself, so perhaps that's why I enjoyed this aspect of the episode so much. I also liked the subtle differences between the various scenarios, and how one scenario influenced another, e.g., taking the painting off the wall. But I can also see that if you were distracted while watching this one, it would be confusing.

So far I'm not liking season 4 very much. The first 3 seasons were great but it feels like it's taking a turn that's less appealing.

Why do I get the feeling that Claire, the one who solved the Nautilus puzzle who was recruited for Samaritan and now comes to Finch for help with the thumb drive, claiming to be all reformed and stuff....she's playing Harold, isn't she?
She's a dirty player, isn't she? She looks dirty. She looks like she's going to double cross him and is just waiting for Finch to install so they can trace.
Wait,...is that Calvin that showed up the twerp?
Ohhh damn, yep, she turned on him. She just pulled a gun on him. I called it again.

Oh I see what you mean about Root. She was ready to kill Finch's new love interest (is that to what you were referring when mentioning her returning to her violent ways?)
But Harold just drank the poison, and has 11 minutes to live. (I know I said I'd wait until the end of the episode before posting, but dammit) ' I wonder if the gf living and her program going live somehow now means it benefits Samaritan. There always is some deep dark meaning down the road that gets revealed.
Why did John's shrink drop him, and she's really nervous now, too, avoiding him. (Edit - Oooohhhh, I just saw why....lol, they have feelings for each other and smooching).
And what's with Harper getting messages directly from The Machine? WTF is up with that? This is just getting derailed now...kind of scattered.
Why did Root steal the activation device? WTF? I thought she was on their side? See what I mean? Scattered.

Oh I see what you mean about Root. She was ready to kill Finch's new love interest (is that to what you were referring when mentioning her returning to her violent ways?) No, the scene I was referring to involves Root, a low level Team Samaritan operative, and a power drill. And now you'll definitely know it when you see it. (I know I said I'd wait until the end of the episode before posting, but dammit) See what I mean? Scattered. I'm sure that your attention being divided between watching and posting isn't helping matters. I still think if you had completely focused on watching "If-Then-Else", then you would have had a more favorable impression.

I generally pause when I post, and I pause when I leave the TV I saw were Root looked like she was working for Samaritan but was hoping that was undercover. My laptop is on my lap and I type while watching tv btw. Plus I'm a very fast typist. I didn't like that format of "If-Then-Else" or anything that shows the same thing over and over from different perspectives over and over, it's a personal thing. I'm on season 5 and I see there's only 13 episodes left.

PS: (by the way, like usual, my tv is paused as I type this), I cried at that episode when the machine was typing "Father...I am sorry I couldn't protect you...I tried...thank you for making me...""
I mean, actually I for real CRIED! As in tears rippled down my cheeks during that scene. I sobbed. It started with "Father" and I felt my heart skip a beat, and I swallowed hard....and cried.
Do they ever get Shaw back?
(Speaking of Shaw, I really hate these "simulation" episodes. They feel like copouts and lazy)

I'm on season 5, episode 9. I'm (sniffle) almost done with the show. Only four more to go.
I'll give my assessment of the entire show when I'm finished, but thus far, I really enjoyed the first 3 seasons the most.

Okay I just finished the very last episode of the entire series. Sad to see John and Root go.
Bit of a confusing ending, as it looks like there's forever mysterious backups of backups being made.
Love the Shaw and the dog reunited and that the phones are still ringing.
Looks like Finch made it after all and decided to come out of the shadows and reunite with his fiancée.
Sort of mixed feelings on the ending because it's somewhat open-ending with the backups.
Super sad to see John die. And really sucked when Elias got shot (he grew on me and I loved the mutual relationship that grew).

Only one backup survived, and that was the machine. All the backups of Samaritan were destroyed. The machine survived by going low-tech with the backup. We see that the message heard in the first and last episodes of Season 5 was recorded on old fashioned reel to reel audio tape. At the end the new machine is on-line and in communication with Shaw. They could have done a spin-off series, but they never did.

I could be wrong but i think they was planning to do a season 6 but got canceled so they had to end it with season 5.

I could be wrong but i think they was planning to do a season 6 but got canceled so they had to end it with season 5. It did go through iterations. From six seasons, to a full length fifth season, to an abbreviated fifth season to tie up loose ends. Sadly, CBS cancelled the show because they didn't want to share the ad revenue with Warner Bros., who owned the show. screenrant.com/person-interest-season-6-cancelled-reason-story/

They could have done a spin-off series, but they never did. I saw that, when the outdoor phone rang, it gave an inkling that perhaps the gang was going to be up and running again. It certainly gave an opportunity there for the series to keep running if there was that option. I feel like we, in real life, are headed there. In the end, Luddites are going to save humanity.

Yes, and there was also the revelation in Season 5 that there were other Team Machine groups operating in cities other than New York. When I wrote that billionaire Logan Pierce was "full of surprises", I was referring to the fact he was a member of one of these groups.
