1. Rey's piloting credentials are just as good as Luke Skywalker's.
Luke devoted all his spare time to training and sharpening his piloting skills. He actually flew a course that was used for training on Tattooine by inspiring military pilots. Some of the pilots who flew the Death Star mission didn't have that much more experience than Luke. Only academy training in a spacecraft. The ship Luke trained in was similar to an X-wing.
Rey says she is a pilot in the movie but from other dialogue it's clear she doesn't regularly fly and has only flown a few times on Jakku. It seems she has either worked on the Millennium Falcon before or watched Unkar Plutt work on it according to dialogue. But she never flew it before.
2. Rey was trained in the Force before. That explains her abilities.
Rey was dropped off on Jakku at 5 years of age. And according to what we see in the PT how old are younglings when they begin their training? Approximately 5 years of age. That leaves little to no room for a training period.
3. Rey downloaded everything she knew about the Force when Kylo tried to mind probe her and she mind probed him back.
That contradicts the "previous training" theory. It also contradicts something onscreen. In the Kylo/Rey lightsaber duel when Rey closes her eyes and meditates on the Force. According to JJ Abrams this is when Rey downloads the Force (a concept he got from a feminist filmmaker, not from SW lore). And this the first time a Force download occurred.
4. Kylo is an amateur who has had very little training.
Kylo was an apprentice of Luke Skywalker. Han Solo confirmed that in his conversation with Rey and Finn. At the beginning of TFA Kylo shows Force ability that even Vader would've been impressed with. Freezing a blaster bolt and Poe at the same time. Then continuing to hold the bolt while interrogating Poe.
Snoke says that he will complete Kylo's training which indicates the need for more training but also establishes that he has been trained. Snoke calls Kylo "the greatest of the Knights of Ren" in a conversation setting that has to do with using the Force and the Darkside. That doesn't paint the picture of a poorly trained amateur.
Some have suggested that all Kylo has done is command Stormtroopers while they do all the dirty work. Kylo is seen actively slaughtering in Rey's vision, not in the background leaving it to others to do. And Han says that an apprentice (Kylo) destroyed it all (Luke's academy and apprentices). He didn't say that the First Order destroyed it all.
5. Rey could defeat Kylo because she has lots of experience and skill using the bo-staff.
The problem with this theory is that it is poorly portrayed as being a factor (if at all) onscreen before Rey's Force download. Rey just runs and returns clumsy blocks to Kylo attacking, chasing, and skillfully toying with her. Not once during this time does Rey give a challenge or have a shining moment of skill.
6. Kylo is childish and unfocused.
Kylo routinely throws juvenile temper tantrums, but unfocused? Someone who can freeze and hold a blaster bolt while interrogating someone is not unfocused. Kylo doesn't shout in pain or groan when he is shot by Chewbacca's bowcaster. That's not the behavior of someone unfocused.
7. Kylo lost to Rey because he was injured.
Kylo gets to the spot of the lightsaber duels before Rey and Finn despite the fact that he was behind them when everyone left for the forest, and he was initially limping. The injury certainly was not a factor there.
Even though Kylo is bleeding and pounds on his injury several times he matches the speed of Finn's attacks and toys with him most of the duel.
When he duels with Rey Kylo totally dominated that duel up until Rey's download. Not once did he pause. Not once did he grimace. Not once did Rey momentarily get the best of him or give him a challenge. The injury being a factor during Rey's battle was either poorly written or poorly executed. Rey's download is the only factor to Kylo being challenged and losing according to the visual portrayal during that part of the film.
Also Kylo lost to Rey in the mind probe battle and he was not injured then.
8. Kylo couldn't use the Force during the duels because he was injured.
Kylo starts out by using the Force to throw Rey into the trees and knock her unconscious. He then chooses not to use the Force against Finn to prove that he deserves to have Luke's former lightsaber by proving he is superior in dueling skill. After defeating Finn Kylo again uses the Force trying to Force grab the lightsaber. Only because Rey Force grabs it from him does he not accomplish it.
9. Rey's uses of the Force can't be called MarySue. She didn't do anything that Luke or Anakin didn't do.
Rey is the only character who uses the Force during their first attempt against a trained Force user and always succeeds.
10. Rey's critics are misogynistic and sexist. She wouldn't get any of these complaints if the character had been male.
People forget that the child version of Anakin in TPM received criticism for being a badly written character within the context of the SW universe. Jake Lloyd even received death threats from prequel haters for that very reason.
