It was devastating. I'm sure many of you know already how hard losing an animal can be. She was very poorly with kidney trouble.
So, I said I'm never, EVER going to put myself in the position of owning an animal again...ever.
So, now we have two little 10 wk old smelly buggers who came from a farm and had never been handled by humans. I'm already in love with these two crazy monsters, who occasionally plonk themselves on my lap for strokes and tummy rubs and pieces of chicken.

It's awful. Very sorry for you. I like cats. Lot of cat people on these boards who will empathize.

Catman knows this pain. Gusty, Cassie, Xander, and Andrew remain in his heart.

Welcome to the boards. And I'm sorry about your kitty, but am happy you're finding a bit of consolation.

Catman knows this pain. Gusty, Cassie, Xander, and Andrew remain in his heart. It's a pain like no other. Even looking at photos is difficult. Does Catman now have other cats?

While I am more of a dog person, I know very well how heartbreaking it is to lose a furry friend. If you are aware of the concept of the Rainbow Bridge, I hope you will find it consoling. If not, you seem to have a couple of younger friends who may comfort you. I hope they do!

Dazed, Miko (the grey dilute tortie) does like slippers. Katsura is not particularly fond of shoes.

I try to allow my aging pets to die natural deaths, when possible. I just had one of my elderly babies pass away about a month ago--I knew it was coming, and held him and comforted him until he died; I've been through that several times, and I'm always thankful I could be there for them when the time came. But sometimes their suffering is too great to allow it to continue, and euthanization is the only way. That's hard to handle, but fortunately most of the vets I've encountered today are more sensitive than they used to be, and have allowed me to be with them at the critical moment. Hopefully yours did likewise. And of course, the reaction of 'never again' always follows--but it doesn't last (as you've shown), and I think the experience tends to have the silver lining of making for a better and more sensitive owner. Death is, after all, part of the deal, and who better to help us with accepting that lesson than the friends who've shared their love with us all throughout their lives?
Anyway, my condolences to you. And congratulations on finding two new friends who will be a kindly reminder of the one who's gone, and joys in their own right.

amyghost Thank you. It was difficult to tell how much distress she was in at first, since cats are so stoical. There were small hints, lack of grooming, lethargy, peeing in the house and then she would only eat broth. So when the vet gave us the bad news it wasn't a huge surprise. They did allow one of us to say goodbye but nobody was allowed to be with her. Lockdown has been a very strange experience hasn't it. The new kittens are very different from one another, one is basically tame already the other is still a little wary but both respond well to bribery!

I add my condolences, Dazed. You've come to the right place to interact with folks who know how you feel. (WELCOME! BTW.) However, around this bunch, there is no way that you'll never, EVER, have a pet, again! The "little buggers," are already wearing you down.

They are so much fun to watch, I'd forgotten what young cats are like. The fighting and running around like lunatics, no having to coax them to eat because they are ravenous, clever little things needed no litter box training they just do it. Finding them sleeping in random spots is funny and I woke up from a nap this afternoon to find both snoozing away on me. It's therapeutic having little purring machines snuggled up to you.
