James Candy went missing on August 6-7, 2017 from his home outside of Vegreville, Alberta. He was from a large blended family that experienced a heartbreaking loss in 2014 when James' older brother David died from alcohol poisoning. James and David were quite close and his parents have stated that David's death took a toll on James, who had recently turned 14. James also experienced bullying at school due to his slight frame.
On the evening of August 6th, James had planned to hang out with a friend although I am unable to find exactly what their plans were. I live in the area and have heard they planned on going to a bush party but this is unverified. While James and his friend were leaving the Candy house, his mother noticed something in his pocket and eventually discovered that James had a small amount of marijuana. At this point, James' friend left to go home while James stayed home.
James' parents claim that at this point, they sat him down and had a discussion about the marijuana they found. Having lost a child to substance abuse, his parents were concerned about the substance use and did not want any drugs in the house. During their discussion, James explained that he was feeling a lot of pressure at school due to bullying and having recently been rejected by a girl which was why he was using marijuana to self-medicate. At some point, James' parents told him that they were disappointed in him. After the discussion about the marijuana ended, the family discussed the chores for the following day before saying "I love you" and going to bed.
Some time after 11pm, James wrote a suicide note and climbed out his bedroom window. He took his lariet (lasso) with him and left the window open as he left. His father discovered the open window the next morning around 930am and wasn't concerned as it wasn't out of the ordinary for James to be out with the animals in the morning. After searching the property, his father returned to the bedroom and found the suicide note on James' desk. The note mentioned missing his brother, all the pressures he was facing, and that he was very distraught about disappointing his parents. The family searched all the outbuildings at this point and called the RCMP after being unable to locate him. James left behind his ATM card, wallet, and learners license.
The RCMP has been actively involved in the search for James but due to a lack of evidence/foul play, they have limited options to help. During the initial 4 day search, canines indicated on a slough located on the Candy farm but after draining it, no evidence was found.
It is my belief that James ultimately ended his life shortly after leaving home. The area he disappeared from is farmland and there is a large amount of wildlife that may have scattered the remains. The treed areas are hard to search as they are usually left untouched by anyone other than hunters and there is often difficulty in getting permission from farm owners to search their properties. Having talked with many locals, it seems to the general consensus that James' remains will not be found although there are still people who believe that James simply ran away and is living elsewhere under an alias.
This case has been featured on a pocast episode of "The Vanished". I have not listened to the episode but many people from the area give it praise for being accurate. The family remains active on facebook and there have recently been searches of more farmland in the county. These searches have included help from Canadian Canine Search Corps but have yielded no results thus far.
