The greatest speech ever was said.
In less than an hour, aircraft from here will join others from around the world, and you will be launching the largest aerial battle in the history of mankind. Mankind. That word should have new meaning for all of us today. We can't be consumed by our petty differences anymore. We will be united in our common interests. Perhaps it's fate that today is the Fourth of July, and you will once again be fighting for our freedom. Not from tyranny, oppression, or persecution… but from annihilation. We're fighting for our right to live. To exist. And should we win the day, the Fourth of July will no longer be known as an American holiday, but as the day when the world declared in one voice: We will not go quietly into the night! We will not vanish without a fight! We're going to live on! We're going to survive!
Today we celebrate our Independence Day!
Happy 4th of July everyone!

I cringe at that speech from Independence Day. But I probably cringe at most of the movie.

I'm partial to The Great Dictator. Me too. I read that people took his speech as Communist propaganda. I don't see it, though I can see how someone could twist it to make it sound like Communist propaganda though.

Wasn't that mainly during the McCarthy era where they were worried everything was communist? I think ol' Charlie did have socialist leanings, but you'd have to be an objectivist nowadays to be offended by that speech.

I didn't do much looking into it, but maybe it was during the McCarthy era when it was brought up. I don't know much about Charles Chaplin besides his acting and directing. I haven't read much on objectivist philosophy, so I can't comment on that. EDIT - I just read the basic gist of it.

Watching Yankee Doodle Dandy today on TCM; the introductory comments mentioned that James Cagney wanted to make a patriotic pro-American film because he was a big union supporter, which led to his being labeled a communist. That's a common fascist trick--anyone on the left is labeled a socialist/communist. Both Chaplin and Cagney were on a hit list, along with many Jewish personalities in Hollywood (Sylvia Sidney, Jack Benny, etc.); their assassinations were to be carried out by members of the American Nazi party, who were planning a full-scale invasion of the U.S. which would also include terrorist attacks and massacres. They were planning a huge rally in NYC in December of 1941, but after Pearl Harbor, the event never took place. Whenever these groups are criticized, they tend to fight back with automatic accusations of "socialists" and "communists" against their critics, a tradition still followed today by Fox "News" and its viewing audience.

I'm happy to report the news that we did in fact captured and killed a large predator, that supposedly injured some bathers. But, as you can see, it is a beautiful day, the beaches are open, and everyone is having a wonderful time. Amity, as you know, means friendship.

See you got your rubbers!
