Why are they called this when they’re clearly not solo? Like Ozzy Osbourne, or The Black Keys, when there’s two guys but there’s clearly more on stage performing. Is it because the other members don’t contribute in the songwriting process?

I don't think I've ever seen The Black Keys called a solo artists

I consider them "solo" in the sense that they pretty much have full control over the musicians they pick to work with, what musical direction they want to go in, etc.

^^^ I second this with my being a fan of Alison Krauss who has a foot in both the solo and group field.

Have a contract as a solo artist, musicians are paid employees of the solo artist in effect.
