Many of the Italians: Dario Argento Pier Paolo Pasolini Sergio Leone Bernardo Bertolucci Elio Petri I was just talking about "1900".. Did you like it? I bought this movie at a thrift shop, and realized when that tape ended there was more. I was interested when one of the characters was mentioning how fascism was "the way", and thought "Hmmmm, something new, as opposed to the usual socialistic stuff".. I didn't know it was that long, but with any movie that long, if you see it going nowhere, I'd move onto something else. With any movie, I usually see what else the director did.
I loved Pasolini's first two movies.. Petri is another great director. Sometimes I get he and Ettore Scola (who I like more) because they seem to be very political directors. "La Terrazza" was such a great movie, probably the last great movie I've seen (months ago).
De Sica is my favorite, but I don't think ever had problems. He was an star (acting) before, and I don't think he ever used nudity, or "taboo" in general. Visconti certainly did, and to an extent, maybe Fellini.

Haven't seen 1900 yet, but I'm really hoping to someday.
