I grew up in San Antonio, Texas and was always fascinated by The Alamo, its history and its movies, esp. the John Wayne film that premiered in San Antonio. I saw The Duke, Richard Boone, and Linda Cristal at a supermarket parking lot when they came to town. The premiere took place, not downtown in a ‘30s movie palace, but at my own neighborhood theater, The Woodlawn, in a residential neighborhood. It played there over a year. This thread is valuable to me because my memories of Alamo history and its films stay in my memory. The Alamo today The John Wayne film (1960) What the setting looks like today at Brackettville, Texas The Woodlawn priemier The Last Command (1955). Sterling Hayden as Jim Bowie and Arthur Hunnicut as an authentic David Crockett NOTE: Crockett never referred to himself as “Davy.” That point is made forceabley in the 2004 film with Billy Bob Thornton as Crockett.
