I saw this film on the Late Show one winter night in the early Seventies. It was about returning WWII vets going to college on the GI Bill in the late Forties, so I think that's when it came out. The vets are older than the frat boys, natch, and have been through hell and aren't about to put up with all the snobby and snarky Greek crap. The vets form their own social organization and start having parties and hanging out... almost like a fraternity. I've been told this sort of thing happened routinely on many American postwar campuses...especially in the bigger schools. Like the state schools. Of course, you know what happens next. One of the leaders of the veterans' outfit falls for some sorority chick who has a boyfriend in one of the frats, and there's a fight at a party off-campus. Somebody gets clocked with a booze bottle and almost dies. Or DOES die. It might have even been the girl they were fighting over! (I'm old and my memories of this movie are hazy, because 1972 was a LONG time ago). This was NOT "Take Care of My Little Girl" (1951), with Jeanne Crain and Dale Robertson. This was probably made right after the war...maybe 1946 or '47, because it would have been more topical then. And the Jeanne Crain vehicle is somewhat comedic in places, and more light and breezy. This film had very little light-heartedness, as I recall. In fact, it was rather dark in tone and had a lot of tension in it, as the two factions got more and more pissed-off at each other before the final showdown. The actors performed well in this rather schlocky film...you really felt like both sides really despised one another. There were class and status differences up the wazoo. The girl in question was just an excuse for a rumble that was a long time in coming. Probably based on something that might have happened in Real Life somewhere. I did a number of IMDb searches over time, but no dice. Anyone else remember this one?

Sounds vaguely familiar but I came up with nothing looking through every WW2 and post WW2 listings.
