Avatar: The Way of Water has earned $139.3M in international IMAX markets through Monday. The film is the highest grossing IMAX release of all time in 44 markets worldwide including: South Korea, France, Germany, Mexico, Italy, India, UAE, Switzerland, Finland, Denmark, Norway, Ukraine, Austria, Belgium, Turkey, Argentina, Malaysia, Indonesia, Chile, Singapore, Thailand, and Colombia.
Through Monday, Avatar: The Way of Water has earned $75.7M on IMAX screens in North America — the third highest IMAX domestic box office performance ever. Avatar: The Way of Water continues to gain ground in China, where IMAX screens have earned $47.6M to date, which accounts for 23% of the Chinese box office on only 1% of the film’s total screens in China. The film’s run in China was extended through next week’s Lunar New Year holiday, the perennial peak season for Chinese moviegoing.
“Avatar: The Way of Water is a global cultural event that is so special in IMAX, and we are making the most of that opportunity — driving record-breaking results across a diverse collection of markets from France to India to South Korea and far beyond,” said Rich Gelfond, the chief executive officer of IMAX. “Avatar: The Way of Water continues to play like so many James Cameron megahits before it, connecting with audiences across a wide swath of cultures with remarkable staying power at the box office.”

Avatar producer Jon Landau hints to Empire Magazine that Earth may not be quite the dystopian hellscape in the franchise's eventual finale, Avatar 5. "After a big time-jump in Avatar 4, the final film will come to Earth. The series' only previous glimpse of our planet has been in deleted scenes from the first film, presenting it as a stark dystopia. "There's over-population, and a depletion of our natural resources that make life harder... But we don't want to paint a bleak picture for where our world is going. The films are also about the idea that we can change course."

Avatar: The Way of Water becomes only the third movie of the last 29 years to be #1 at the box office for six consecutive weekends, after Avatar in 2009/10 and Titanic in 1997/98.

The first one was also nominated for Best Picture. The first one was also much better and more unique at that time. I think they're both trash. Saw the original once on television, didn't bother with the sequel. But a cinematic phenomenon deserves a nomination at least, especially with ten slots available.

It's already clear that Avatar: The Way of Water's box office is drastically outperforming the average of the top 10 box office earners of all time. As a newly minted member of the top 10, its $134 million opening weekend is the third lowest on the list, ahead of only Titanic ($28.6 million) and the original Avatar ($77 million) - which are both also directed by Cameron. Prior to Avatar: The Way of Water pumping Furious 7 off the list, the average non-Cameron movie in the top 10 made 35 percent of its total domestic haul in its opening weekend, meaning the average multiplier is 2.91.
If Avatar: The Way of Water had a multiplier of 2.91, it'd earn $390 million domestically. With its domestic haul accounting for 30 percent of its global haul, that means a 2.91 multiplier would put it at $1.3 billion, a number it's already sailed past. In fact, the best multiplier from a non-Cameron film in the top 10 is The Force Awakens' 3.78. If Avatar: The Way of Water had a 3.78 multiplier, it would gross $506 million domestically and $1.7 billion globally, which are also numbers it has already sailed past.
