Along with her, the domestic helper in the family, whose name was Hemraj was also murdered. Brief Facts: in going to mention the facts very briefly, but for more elaborate information you can visit the Wikipedia page because it’s impossible to write all theories in this post. Aarushi’s parents: Dr. Rajesh (father) & Dr. Nupur Talwar (mother). Mother wakes up in the morning to let the maid enter the house. Here we must note that every morning the domestic helper Hemraj opened the door but today no one opened the door so that is why mother had to wake up. In fact, when she went to open the door, the door was locked to which the mother assumed that it was because Hemraj must have gone out to take milk and closed the door from outside.
Mother asked the maid to wait outside until Hemraj returned. The maid did not want to wait and asked mother to throw the keys. Mother asked her to go downstairs so that she could throw the keys to her from the balcony.
Maid enters. Then mother goes about doing work. She goes to Aarushi’s room to find that her daughter’s throat has been slit. She wakes her husband up. And then the usual happens, police is called. The key here is that Ghaziabad Police which conducted the preliminary had botched the whole investigation as the crime scene wasn’t preserved, anyone was let to enter and all that. It was a lot similar to how police didn’t preserve the scene in Jon Bennet Ramsey’s case. Aarushi’s body was found on 16th May. So, on 16 May, the missing servant Hemraj was the prime suspect. In his police complaint, father blamed Hemraj for his daughter's murder.
“He repeatedly told the police to pursue Hemraj instead of wasting time in the apartment, and offered them ₹ 25,000 to rush to Hemraj's native village in Nepal. The police suspected that Hemraj entered Aarushi's room in an inebriated state after consuming Scotch whisky, and tried to sexually assault her. When she resisted, he killed her with a kukri (a Nepali knife).”
So we need to remember that their house was structured in such a way that the family lived in one part, and Hemraj had a separate room and washroom and his room had a separate gate which opened outside, other than the main flat gate.
Further, on the morning of 16th May some family friends say that they noticed blood stains on the terrace door, so father and his friends went to the terrace. However there are reports that some people claim they saw no blood stains. Please read the Wikipedia page for the whole thing. So they could not open the terrace because no key. Next day they (now, the police) finally somehow get the duplicate of the key, open the terrace and “As the group entered the terrace, they saw bloody drag marks. A body in advanced stage of putrefaction" was discovered lying in a pool of blood at about 10:30 am.”
Fast forward, one of the most common theory and the theory which most people and the police believed was that the parents found the domestic helper in a “comprising position” with their daughter, implying sexual intercourse. Parents were enraged, hacked Hemraj to death and in a fit of anger killed their daughter. They took the body of Hemraj to the roof to mislead the police. This theory was used in the court, and was further corroborated with forensic report which indicated “sexual intercourse” on Aarushi’s body. This again is highly debated because the forensic report was also botched.
The parents were eventually convicted of murder and jailed but then 2-3 years later they were released as their conviction was overturned by court in appeal.
This brings me to the second theory, which is that Hemraj had invited some of his friends over, one of whom was a helper at the father’s dental clinic. His name is Krishna Thadarai. So I’ll wrap in short, the police and other’s agree to the fact that when they were in the house that morning and checked Hemraj’s room, they saw that there were impressions on the mattress which indicated that more than one person was sitting there in Hemraj’s room. Further, this guy Krishna had fed a lot of irrelevant info to the police such as the idea that the parents were involved in affair and they used to swipe wives and husbands and what not. Eventually when the case was handed over to Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), they investigated this Krishna’s house to find a knife. NARCO tests were conducted and what not, he was indicated as a suspect. In fact other men, like this guy named Mandal, who was the domestic help of Talwars neighbours indicated that the father had one day shouted at Krishna in the clinic for not working properly and thus, Krishna wanted to take revenge. Long story short, it is believed by the CBI that these men were drunk, Krishna went to Aarushi’s room, found her sleeping, he tried to rape her but Hemraj was stopping him, when Krishna smacked Hemraj and killed Aarushi in a fit of anger.
Now these are the two most prevalent theories. It is still largely unsolved as no one knows who exactly murdered the two. Please go through the links. The case is elaborate and there are many facets. It’s an interesting read. There is a movie starring late actor Irfan Khan called “Talwar”.
