Scream 4 (2011)
I honestly like it as much as the original. It's clever, funny and surprisingly violent. A wonderful swansong from Wes Craven.

The original version of Scream 2 would've been amazing. The script leaked on the Internet so they had to change the plot. The original killers were supposed to be Derek Feldman (Sidney's boyfriend played by Jerry O'Connell), Hallie McDaniel (Sidney's roommate in a relationship with Derek, portrayed by Elise Neal), Debbie Salt (Billy mother from the first Scream, always envisioned as a killer in the sequel as a nod to Friday the 13th), and a fourth killer! Cotton Weary was supposed to snap in the end and try to take revenge against Sidney and Gale, killing Gale and then getting in a a knock-down, drag-out fight with Sidney where both wind up presumably dead. Four killers.... that would've been an epic sequel! Way better than the final version of Scream 2. i do like good guy Cotton, but mostly cuz liev schrieber oozes charisma.

Cotton could have gone either way for me, though I'm guessing if 2 ended as originally intended, Cotton would have come back in 3 masterminding everything from inside prison (an idea Williamson had for Stu that was then scrapped entirely until he made The Following). Much better movie. But if nothing else, Derek and Hallie would have been a lot better than Mickey. The shady film student with 8 lines? Not very inspired.

Scream 2. I rank them in order that they came out. So yeah, I think Scream 3 is a better movie than 4. What? Why is everyone looking at me like that?

I recognize 3's faults, but the Roman reveal worked just fine for me and the ending wrapped things up in a nice, neat bow. 4 undid all that -- which is fine -- but didn't have anything to say and felt like a waste of time in the end. Also felt like SteveBuscemiHelloFellowKids.gif: The Movie with its attempts at current relevancy. Side note: I had the Scream 3 ending spoiled by a user in a Yahoo! chatroom by the name of Scream3KillerisRoman back in January 2000. Good times, good times.

I wonder how they knew considering 3 was kept so tight that it didn't even have test screenings... although 4 did, and because of that the killers were all over the Internet the next morning so I had a similar experience. Glad to know spoiler assholes always existed. The Roman twist was so soap operatic. Long lost brother twists are always shit to me. Plus it felt like they were adding an unnecessary layer to the mythos just to make Roman stand out. So he's the guy who told Billy why his mom left...whoopdie do.
4 was a little hammy in its messaging about "kids today", but it's still a clever deconstruction to me to have the person attempting to "reboot the series" be Sidney's cousin in attempt to usurp her fame. Rather than an old man trying to be hip, it was kinda ahead of its time with stuff like The Force Awakens.

I couldn't afford going to the theater and was probably stuck at home watching TRL and/or Who Wants To Be a Millionaire. π€
