Lee was the first "action" Dracula, sprinting down the stairs to meet Harker, furiously driving a coach and going hand to hand with Van Helsing in that famous energetic climax in 1958. After that, quickly tiring of the role, he basically walked through the sequels that got increasingly worse while writers tried to come up with new ways to kill him until his next appearance. That wagon wheel bit was one of the more memorable.
Lugosi's Count was quietly eerie and his natural accent amplified the other worldly quality of his performance. He only got one chance to do the character as originally written. He maintained some dignity while meeting Abbott and Costello and his pseudo Dracula, Armand Tesla, greatly helped a mostly lethargic Return of the Vampire.
Other actors may have more closely resembled Stoker's description (John Carradine) or shocked audiences with a realistic image of the walking undead (Max Schreck), but Lugosi's elegant charisma remains as powerful today as it was when he stood on the stairs and greeted Dwight Frye with the simple and chilling, "I am Dracula".

I recall a TV version maybe back in the late 60's/early 70's with Jack Palance as the bloodsucker. He was truly creepy and scary. But Lugosi was probably the quintessential Dracula, with Frank Langella coming in second as the sexy Dracula.

Gary Oldman was probably the most three dimensional and balanced. He wasn't the creepiest (Schreck), the most fun (Lugosi), or the most alluring (Langella). But he's the only one who really tapped into all of it. I guess it's a "Jack of all trades, master of none" situation, but overall he comes out the most fully realized as a character.

Here's my diplomatic answer. Max Shreck was the best silent Dracula. Lugosi the best black and white Dracula. Lee the best color Dracula.

Clearly the answer is Gerard Butler. I mean, c'mon.

Frank Langella said that for years men would come up to him and say "Man, did I get well-laid that night we saw your Dracula".

Gary Oldman's Dracula is the one that sticks with me. The hairdo was a bit over-the-top though.

Actually a pretty solid choice. He doesn't have all that much to do, but he makes the character pretty intimidating and plays it straight and scary considering the movie.

I wonder whoโd win if we did a poll.
Anyway, I think Iโll vote for Louis Jourdan. He underplays the role, so he may not seem as memorable at first as Lugosi or Lee, but he exudes a magnificent sense of menace and condescension.

Lee, purely because he became the character as Basil Rathbone did with Holmes. I have a soft spot for Kinski too and Oldham was good in a film ruined utterly by one other actor.
