I assume no one is going to pick Dune, but it is a movie he directed, so I might as well include it.

Top 5 director for me. Current personal favorite would be Blue Velvet. The much maligned INLAND EMPIRE would by a close second.

The Elephant Man (1980), but I find it a very tough watch.

The top picks are almost inevitably going to be Eraserhead, Blue Velvet and The Elephant Man--but I'm gonna be the maverick here and give Dune some love anyway. It has flaws aplenty, but I don't think it's anywhere nearly as bad as its reputation would suggest--and it has the virtue of containing a cast that, for the most part, looked exactly the way I'd pictured them in the novel, no small achievement for this moviegoer.

Eraserhead is my favourite.
Straight Story is underrated. It's not as surreal as his others (although it has Sissy Spacek talking funny), it's like a metaphor for the journey of life or something.
