The Welshmen gave it all they could but the Zulus won both the singing contest and the battle.

The Welshmen gave it all they could but the Zulus won both the singing contest and the battle. The Welsh had better voices but the Zulus had a better rhythm section. The British army successfully defended Rorke's Drift but it was a small part of the Zulu war which was given extra prominence because of the huge defeat at Isandlwana.

I didn't remember that that part of the film shows the Zulus being defeated. I know overall that the British lost.

Zulu was filmed in 1964 (Michael Caines first film role) and was based on the battle of Rorkes Drift which took place a few hours after the battle of Isandlwana that Zulu Dawn (filmed in 1979) was based on.

The British Army eventually won the war against the Zulus (and later against the Boers), but at a heavy cost.

Yes, for a start the British troops were mainly English but we tend to view them as being Welsh due to scenes like the one I posted above and Stanley Baker’s lead role. Zulu Dawn is decent enough but doesn’t have the same spark as Zulu and ends on a downer (unless you support the Zulus).
