I'm at the midpoint of my month of no food shopping. Cut open a good looking orange this morning and it was grey/black around the core. I ate around it - tasty but I still feel like I may be on watch.
Cantaloupe to get cut maybe tomorrow.

Canteloupe? Rockmelon, right? I have almost given up on them because of their variable quality. Millions of poor tasting but high yielding varieties are grown here. The situation is worse than with tomatoes, quantity and good looks over taste.

I've grown them, too. But I never know when to pick them. I like to smell the bud. If I smell sweetness it is ripe. But it can be over ripe. I'm not that good. We have hotter than he!! Temperatures. Enjoy your temps! 108 today. Same as yesterday. Oh! And I had to see the wombat poop. You were right! Lol

How do you do it?

How do you do it? I often screw it up. Keep mine out a few days, then refrigerate for often too long. Sometimes it's hard and tasteless even then, other times it's winey and past its prime. Or I forget to take it of the bag, it gets moldy, and I toss it.

Nj My husband tells me to quit buying them.

How do you do it? I bought two on Tuesday (on sale for 99 cents), but they're not quite ready. Maybe tomorrow. If you keep them in a closed paper bag with a banana and/or apple, the ethylene gas will help them to "ripen" to a softer texture, but similar to watermelon, they won't get any sweeter once picked.
