Just realized theres a sizeable collection on Prime Video, so i plan on seeing a bunch that I haven't before...
Stagecoach...Seriously just a great movie. It's got a fantastic ensemble that make the random conversations equally as interesting as being chased by rifle wielding Apaches. It's said this is where Wayne got his promotion to A List and its easy to see why. Claire Trevor was also very beautiful as Dallas, Waynes love interest and a prostitute (or at least i think thats why everyone hated her). It really rounds out several small storylines nicely including the drunken doctor kind of finding himself and the barrier between the 'high' class passengers and the 'low' class passengers being brought down over the course of the film. Really really great movie.
Big Jake...I liked this one a lot. As always John Wayne has his clever one liners that are sprinkled throughout the film. His character in this is also larger than life and seemingly everyone has heard of him and fears him, even though they all thought he was dead. I liked that. Fains Gang (the bad guys) were colorful enough. A lot blended into the background but a few like Goodfellow and Breed stand out a lot. Didn't care for the motorcycle stuff tho. Not huge on motor vehicles and westerns colliding to that degree. Just never feels right to me. Kinda cool to see a few of Waynes actual sons play his fictional sons/grandsons in this one. James even emulated his walk.
Already Seen... The Searchers Stagecoach El Dorado The War Wagon Red River Angel and the Badman The Comancheros The Man who Shot Liberty Valance The Sons of Katie Elder Rio Bravo True Grit The Alamo Big Jake Hondo Sands of Iwo Jima

Stagecoach is a great movie. I've been allowed back to this great site and I'm happy to discuss movies and sports and TV with other fans. No politics tho. That got me in trouble. Must see Duke movies include:
The Searchers Red River Rio Bravo El Dorado The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance The Quiet Man True Grit Stagecoach She Wore A Yellow Ribbon Rio Grande
John Wayne was a good actor despite the smug accusation that he always played John Wayne. The Searchers, Red River Liberty Valance and True Grit are all proof of that.

I suggest Fort Apache, She Wore A Yellow Ribbon, and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.

Must add - Fort Apache They Were Expendable In Harm's Way The Longest Day As a part-time Communist, I suggest that those who boycott Wayne's films because of his supposed politics are doing themselves a great disservice.

Thank you. I considered adding Fort Apache and at least one of the war movies you mentioned but 10 is such a nice even number for film lists I decided not to do it. Spot on about people who complain about his politics or his not serving in the military. It's their loss.

Just by film credits, I had seen fifty-four movies with John Wayne. The Searchers, How the West Was Won, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, The Longest Day, Stagecoach, Hatari!, and The Shootist are my favorites. Big Jake is a middle-tied entry but it’s decently acted with some surprisingly dark moments.

Recently rewatched Stagecoach and liked it a lot. That chase at the end is incredible and the stunt work, especially the 'Apache' being run over by the coach is mindblowingly dangerous. Unfortunately it seems a few of the horses were badly injured and had to be put down.

Hondo...Entertaining tale of stranger coming to a ranch and falling in love with a woman and becoming a father figure to her kid. I did like how the Apache weren't just bloodthirsty threats and that Vitorio was at least portrayed as an honorable man, in his own way of course. This is the second straight movie where Wayne has a dog sidekick and the dog gets killed. I really hope that isn't a constant cuz i like his dogs more than i like any of the side characters and most of the main ones.

Plus I'll add McClintock! since that's pretty funny.

Stagecoach is in my Top Ten Westerns. The chase scene is thrilling, though I'm sure some stunt men must've been injured. No CGI in those days.

The Cowboys is one of his better late movies. In between Liberty Valance and this one, the Duke made a long string of so-so movies, none were bad but none very good either. And I place True Grit in that group.

Angel and the Badman...Very good western about a gunman and a quaker gal who fall in love. Nice contrast between lifestyles and philosophies here. Much less action packed than most, but still has a bar fight and some shootouts all the same. I just about fell in love with Gail Russell and her big beautiful eyes too. A shame she fell into the bottle and died rather young.

Are you new to the Duke? Or a long time fan? Long time fan but I realized I hadn’t seen as many as I should, I’ve just been rewatching the ones I’m familiar with. So the ones I’ve reviewed in this thread are all first time watches...although some I’ve seen bits and pieces of.

I suggest Fort Apache, She Wore A Yellow Ribbon, and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. Ah, Liberty Valance. A flawed film mostly because Stewart was too old and the sentimentally Ford leaned on was going out of style. But this is gold: I was always a fan of Lee Marvin. I loved him in Comancheros even though he wasn't a very nice fellow.
