Stagecoach is a great movie. I've been allowed back to this great site and I'm happy to discuss movies and sports and TV with other fans. No politics tho. That got me in trouble. Must see Duke movies include: The Searchers Red River Rio Bravo El Dorado The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance The Quiet Man True Grit Stagecoach She Wore A Yellow Ribbon Rio Grande John Wayne was a good actor despite the smug accusation that he always played John Wayne. The Searchers, Red River Liberty Valance and True Grit are all proof of that. He grew into his craft, though he was a movie star before being an actor. He had been around Hollywood (mostly with John Ford) for a while, and even landed a starring role The Big Trail and continued in B-movies and supporting parts for Ford until the director showcased him in Stagecoach. His reintroduction scene is stunning. Howard Hawks pushed him on Red River and the Duke, as always, learned from the masters. The Shooters Shootist was his valedictory. This is the image of the uniquely American hero. There is one old, old b-movie where he plays a hockey goon. He learned to ice skate for the part. I love that Ringo was so naive in Stagecoach he never figured out Dallas was a prostitute. You are spot on about that intro shot of Ringo Kid. So iconic and pure starmaking brilliance. John Ford knew Duke was a star more than Wayne himself did and certainly more than the studios did. I've seen several documentaries on Ford and he was fascinating. You and many here are probably familiar with the same docs I've seen but I'll never tire of watching Peter Bogdanovich try to interview a very succinct Ford. In case anyone wants a reminder. I hate to be smug or argumentative but I'll power through anyway and ask How can anyone say they love film but not like John Ford?

I suggest Fort Apache, She Wore A Yellow Ribbon, and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. Ah, Liberty Valance. A flawed film mostly because Stewart was too old and the sentimentally Ford leaned on was going out of style. But this is gold: I dig that scene so much. "I said you Liberty. You pick it up." Lee Marvin makes a great villain as always. Pure unfiltered asshole bully. Strother Martin makes the perfect toady and Lee Van Cleef as that silent wild card. The whole scene is close to perfect. How did the Marshall live to be so old? He was eating 4 or 5 steaks a day and hadn't seen his feet in decades probably. Have to edit to add (big surprise) My Darling Clementine is wonderful too. My favorite version of the OK Corral incident. I do like Gunfight at with Kirk Douglas and Burt Lancaster and Tombstone is fun but MDC is the benchmark.

Hondo...Entertaining tale of stranger coming to a ranch and falling in love with a woman and becoming a father figure to her kid. I did like how the Apache weren't just bloodthirsty threats and that Vitorio was at least portrayed as an honorable man, in his own way of course. This is the second straight movie where Wayne has a dog sidekick and the dog gets killed. I really hope that isn't a constant cuz i like his dogs more than i like any of the side characters and most of the main ones. YEARS later I learned that there was a real Vittorio and the character is loosely based on him. Michael Pate, who played him, was an Australian.

Red River....Very good. I thoroughly enjoyed about 95 percent of this movie. My only grief comes with the love interest added in the second half. Not exactly that there was a love interest, but rather her attitude and demeanor took me right out of the movie. Her acting all sassy and flirty while getting attacked by indians and plunked with an arrow in the shoulder...it just made me roll my eyes. I loved everything else about it though. The relationship between Dunson and Matt was very interesting to watch deteriorate for most of the film, and be patched up in the end. I didn't expect to root against John Wayne in this one but sure as sh-t that's what happened. He's a bigger jerk here than in the Searchers. Really good movie.

So far there have been just two mentions of Sands of Iwo Jima (no definite article) from 1949, Lebowskidoo 🦞 and Marv. "Sands" was Duke's only Oscar nomination until True Grit (1969) for which he won Best Actor. Everyone should see, at the very least, his two Oscar recognized performances.

It’s on Prime for sure...and I feel like I saw it was on Netflix also. Just for reference.

The Alamo...Very good. Slightly bloated, especially on the front end...but there's some good action sequences and the character interaction between the big three of Travis, Crockett and Bowie was very entertaining. Ill probably never wind up watching this in its entirety again because the runtime was daunting...but ill definitely rewatch bits and pieces, particularly the last half hour.
I recently read a book on the rise and fall of the Comanche and it deals with a lot of Texas history around this time period, but obviously the parts dealing with Comanche. But it's interesting to see people like Sam Houston show up here, having just read about a bunch of his interactions with the Comanche. Now i kinda want to read a proper history on the Alamo story.

The Comancheros is a good film. The Duke did a lot of the directing as Michael Curtiz wasn't well.
I like The Horse Soldiers, though many don't.
