Recently one of the grocery stores I go to started selling an Italian hard cheese that looks a lot like Parmesan for a very reasonable price. I bought it and really liked it - but then I read the small letters on the label in the back and found out that it is made in Estonia! The name is Italian, all the writing in the front of the package is in Italian, but it's not actually Italian. I felt a bit cheated, although I guess I shouldn't, since it tastes pretty good and as I said the price is very reasonable.
I don't think I would have bought it if the packaging were in Estonian, so I suppose the exporters knew what they were doing by trying to pass it off as Italian.

I've never seen any Parmagiano Reggiano cheese in any of my local stores. It's the real deal, aged a minimum of two years. A bit spendy, I have ordered it from Amazon a number of times.
Usually, I just get the store brands (aged seven months) - or use the canned stuff. Of the store brands, Target's "Archer Farms" is my favorite, but I don't shop there very often.

Canned cheese? What sorcery is that?

I see. My mistake; I wasn't thinking of grated Parmesan cheese, what I was referring to was a wedge of a hard cheese that looks and tastes like Parmigiano/

You 2 are more gourmet than I. Lol
Mostly I use American cheese.
My grandma made a soft cheese like Azorians do. I didn't like it.
I feel like a kid next to your palate.

Just because it's made in a particular place, doesn't mean it's not an Italian cheese. Hello, what do you think us Wisconites make-WI cheese? No we make all different kinds of cheese. Doesn't make the cheese any less Italian, Greek, French.....well except cheeseheads, those generally are styrofoam, plastic.....

You 2 are more gourmet than I. Lol Mostly I use American cheese. I never run out of Kraft Deluxe Choice American cheese (at the moment I have their newer "sharp" variety). I have perhaps a dozen other varieties of other cheeses as well. It lasts for a LONG time unopened. AAMOF, I had a slice of sharp white cheddar with breakfast. I dig cheese.

A dozen different cheeses? You are worse than me! I don't think I ever have fewer than three different types of cheese on my fridge at any time, but never a dozen. Right now I think I have the Estonian Parmigiano, some Feta, cheddar, and a smoked gouda.

Without checking, I have Sharp American, cottage, blue (fridge/freezer/homemade dressing), 3 different cheddars, Swiss, Pepper Jack, Feta, canned and block Parmesan, canned Parmesan/Romano blend, Mozzarella (2 packages), Mexican shredded mix, Italian shredded mix, Philly cream cheese, and Nuefchatel. So that's 17 varieties.

I try not eat cheese for cholesterol reasons (have it mostly under control) but my wife is Italian so multiple times during the week when I get home, we enjoy a small cheese board with some crisps, raisins, fruit, etc. Always at least 3 in the fridge, you're spot on. We have two excellent Italian delis that always carry the good stuff (including the authentic parmagiano cheese, which is the best thing ever), plus a quality cheese monger two towns over. Feta....now you're singing my song. You catch me after a few beers, I'll just sit and eat the block of it.

I sometimes substitute cheese for butter, and the strongly-flavoured cheeses like Feta and Parmesan add that cheesy goodness without needing a whole lot of it.

It is sad, that most other areas in the world cannot import Frech unpasteurised French cheeses.
THEY ARE AMAZING!
When in France I cannot express the flavours of these cheeses that I sampled and enjoyed.
I commend you all to try artisan cheese made by small makers and companies, in your own countries. It is worth it!

There is only one true feta and that is Dodonis straight from Greece. Can be sheep's milk or goat's milk or a combination of the two. Anything else is not real feta. Greece is trying to get back the name as a PDO (or whatever the origin thing is). Anything not coming from Greece will be "feta-like". Right now there are many "estonian parmigian" types of feta out there. It's the same with Greek yogurt. Real Greek yogurt is NOT 0%. It only has 3 ingredients. Here's a link to a Canadian made Greek yogurt skotidakis greek yogurt

Unfortunately when you have bad actors on the scene(the actual ones who cause the damage) are generally out of towners. The ones who live there(at least for the most part) don't want to damage their own property. We're in a suburb outside of Milwaukee. I hope it doesn't come out here, because our whole lives are in our building & Covid didn't help.
