If you can find it (our local WinCo has it), there's some pretty decent gyro meat and tzatziki sold under the brand name Opaa!, and the pita flatbread made by Papa Pita is absolutely outstanding - best I've ever had.

my local greek place finally opened back up----so great to have a gyro. We call them doner kebabs here. They are slices of lamb or chicken sliced off the spinning meat thing in a flat bread wrapped with humous, fresh tomato, lettuce, red onion tabbouleh zatziki sometimes cheese and garlic or BBQ sauce DEELISH!

No good gyros places in the Mobile, Al. area, one place actually cooked the meat in a frying pan instead of slicing the meat off the spit! Best Gryos in the U.S. I ever had was at Munster Gyros in Munster, In. - Munster is in NW Indiana and part of the Chicagoland area.

WKM They never had many customers. Their location was poor with limited parking . I may be in your place without a gyro too. Isn't the spit thing cool? That meat is delicious!

I've made a gyro loaf a few times - even custom built a pan and rack to cook it (from a piece of four-inch stovepipe), but it's really a PITA (NPI). That's why I'm glad I discovered that Opaa! gyro meat.
Back-burnered for now, I'm going to take another stab at making the easy version, cooked similar to taco meat but with different spices.

Did you find the gyro meat in a grocery store? Is it frozen? WinCo sells the Opaa! brand which is something like $5 for 12 ounces. It's not frozen (although I do have a package in the freezer). You just toss the strips in a pan or the oven - easier to make than a taco. We have two good Greek delis/restaurants in town, both of which make excellent gyros, but I haven't gone back since I discovered this option. When I have it, I add deli turkey to my gyro, sometimes hummus. I've also made gyro egg rolls. I make all kinds of strange egg rolls - a great "cheat" alternative to chiles rellenos for example. On the list to try at some point is making ravioli from wonton wraps or quartered egg roll wraps.

Ours did too!! I order the gyro platter and we share. It comes with the meat, pita bread, chopped onion, tomatoes, lettuce and the sauce. It's enough for both of us plus enough leftover for another meal. I have kalamata olives and feta cheese at home to add and sometimes hummus. Love it!!
I've seen gyro 'kits' at HyVee before but don't shop there right now. It had pita bread, the meat and sauce in the frozen foods section. Don't remember the brand but they were good. You could also buy individual frozen ones.

I have found you can get gyros in a Greek pizzeria for less than you would pay for one in any other Greek dining establishment and they taste just as good.
