Nonetheless, it's true. Good luck with iron deficiency, B-12 deficiency, a weakened immune system, a higher risk of experiencing bone fractures, high blood pressure, rashes, or fatigue, just to name a few. Well ...if YOU never met a healthy vegan .... guess that's proof positive that there are none ! It's a fact, and nothing to do with just me meeting any. I've meet a lot, and they all had health issues; one almost died from stomach issues associated with vitamin deficiency and "starvation" - her intake had very little nutritional value. Don't take my word for it. In about 12 months, you'll be feeling the adverse effects.

Pinky had sent her condolences in a previous post which brought forth : WHY ? Being vegan works for a lot of people ! It's just that some get all preachy about it. Rather like Born-Agains I've yet to meet a vegan who actually is healthy. A vegan diet is not healthy. Vegetarian, if followed properly, yes; but no vegan. That’s weird. Because my friend has been Vegan for 10 years and she’s healthier than before she became vegan. I doubt it. Why ? Because the people you know are un-healthy and you conclude that it's because they are vegans ? Similar thinking produces : My friend tried and tried to stop smoking! She could not do it therefor No One Can !

If I ever went vegetarian, I'd be close to a vegan, since I can't handle dairy products.
My feeling is: if you can live healthily on a diet completely devoid of animal-derived foods, more power to you. My one caveat is: if you have a pet, please don't try to turn it into a vegan, unless you have a rabbit (or a gorilla). Both cats and dogs belong to the order of mammals called Carnivora--i.e., carnivores or meat-eaters. While dogs, being closer to omnivores than pure carnivores, can go for a while on a soy-based diet, cats really, really need meat. If they do not get enough meat, what will happen to them? They will go blind. Why? Because a plant-based diet is devoid of taurine, a vital nutrient:
"Taurine is important for cat health in a lot of different ways. It is not only important for the reproductive system, but also for the proper functioning of the eyes, heart, and other areas of the feline body. The reason a cat has to be a meat eater is that meat is the only natural source of this nutrient." - Dr. Marty

ellynmacgInteresting about those cats ! Have you seen the movie Shirley Valentine ? Shirley is helping out a neighbor by feeding her bloodhound while she is away. The neighbor AND dog are vegans. Shirley's hubby's steak is given to the dog because "he is a Bloodhound not a Veggyhound." Mayhem ensues ! Highly recommend the movie on many levels.
