I hope Bat was joking by posting a trailer clearly edited after 1960. The trailer that Bat posted was labelled on YouTube as "official Psycho Trailer " Missed the "clearly edited" ... where is that ?

The uploader is either misinformed or lying. For one thing, Archelaus posted the actual official trailer. And as you can see in that one, trailers in 1960 didn't have the same fast cuts and use of music as modern ones. The trailer you posted probably would have given 1960 audiences an epileptic seizure.

Among the major promotional items for this movie was a lengthy coming attractions trailer (filmed in several languages) of Sir Alfred Hitchcock taking the audience on a seemingly lighthearted tour of the house and motel. At the end, Hitchcock pulls open a shower curtain to reveal a close-up of a woman screaming. The actress is not Janet Leigh, but Vera Miles wearing a wig similar to Miss Leigh's hairstyle. The logo "Psycho" simultaneously comes onto the screen and cleverly covers Miss Miles' eyes so that the switch is not easily discernible.
Vera wore a wig for her part in the film as well... Vera Miles wore a wig for her role, as she had to shave her head for her role in 5 Branded Women (1960). SO .. why did he not just use a screenshot of Janet Leigh in the movie for the trailer instead of re-shooting the quick cut of a Marion Wigged Vera since her face is covered anyway ? Edit thanks alpha128 Because the specific shot that Hitchcock wanted for the trailer, him pulling the shower curtain aside from outside the tub and "Marion" looking out, doesn't exist in the film. In the film, Marion has her back to the bathroom door and we see "Mother" pulling the shower curtain aside from Marion's perspective of inside the tub.

Maybe audiences thought that, even if she wasn't going to be the real protagonist, she would still appear throughout the movie (kind of like the 3 villains in FARGO).
