Are people here generally okay with the fact that the Matt Reeves Batman film is clearly supposed to be another dark and gritty take on the character? I know that certain Internet personalities like MovieBob aren’t fans of that, but would people on this board have preferred a more lighthearted and colorful Batman movie?
Just to be clear, if you’ve seen at least a few of Matt Reeves’ films, him doing a dark Batman movie shouldn’t be remotely surprising. His Planet of the Apes movies are pretty dour as far as PG-13 studio movies are concerned, and Cloverfield is also pretty unpleasant.

I had an inkling of what we were in for once he was hired.

The public will never accept a non-gritty Batman ever again. That's a fact. It will never happen. There's too much money involved to risk it. And honestly, do we really want that? I'm one of like 10 people in the world that likes the Schumacher Bat films and I don't even want that again.

I actually wouldn't mind a film that balanced out the grittier side of the Batman mythos with the more upbeat elements. Nor do I think it's impossible. But yeah, I think everyone will immediately pile on it because of the Schumacher backlash.

I think a non-dark and gritty Batman could work with the right writers and director. It doesn't have to be campy, but it can be less serious.

You may be conflating a dark, gritty Batman with the psychotic serial killer in a batsuit Snyder portrayed. They are not the same.

Nah. There are plenty of comic book movies doing the light-hearted thing, and for the most part I don’t particularly care for it.

The public would if the movie was well-made. It would still draw kids and families if it was more upbeat. The casting and other things would just need to be good-which is a tall order these days.

It's very much a grounded version of Adam West's Batman. Didn't notice until I rewatched it a few times. But Batman clearly already has a some kind of rapport with Gordon and the police. The way they filmed Batman walking into the crime scene with Gordon, walking between the cops and FBI and forensic teams obviously gives it this cool and badass entrance. But if it were just a regular wide shot, it'd feel more Adam West Batman and look goofy with a man in a Batsuit surrounded by professionals.

Grim/Dark vs. Happy/Happy/Joy/Joy is a false dichotomy. There are other tones and atmospheres to choose from...
That said, there will never be a non-grim/dark Batman film in our lifetime. That is who the character is now.

I made a thread about this a week or two ago. Personally I'd like to see something more on the surreal side- It can still have a dark and grounded crime/mystery story but at least make the visuals and tone a bit less ultra-realistic. This is, after all, about a dude in a bat costume.
