When I was younger, I had trouble pronouncing the word "horror"--people would laugh or give me a weird look when I said I watched a horror film. I had to practice saying "hahrr-ror" so it wouldn't sound like "whore."

No. Three syllables vs. two, plus clear and proper pronunciation should mitigate any misunderstanding. And what's the problem with "vagina" anyway?

When we were taught our first sex ed class in grade 5 we were told not to confuse the country and the body part.

I said it once where it almost got the tar beaten out of me.
A few friends of mine and I were over in Michigan for the hockey game. I had a coffee tin full of American coins, which I was going to run thru the Coinstar machine at one of the banks.
In the episode of The Simpsons where Homer drags a water cooler jug full of pennies to the mailbox - in hopes that the mail carrier will transport it to the city. Homer is wanting to pay a bill with it. He drops it, and the jug bores a big hole in the ground. Homer says:
"Hello China? Little help?"
I made reference to this while I was carrying my coffee tin because it was so heavy. A lady who was within earshot of me thought I was talking to her - referring to her as 'China'. She was of either Oriental or Hawaiian descent.
Oops.
So, I IMMEDIATELY did a double-back.
Still, she wasn't impressed.
