I am loving all the Abbott flashbacks of Ashley with her mother Dina talking about her paternity.
Only these current writers could handle the Return Of Dina storyline in the way that it should be presented. It almost seems like Bill Bell is handling this plot all over again.
I take it we won't be able to see any Dina-Jack flashbacks since Terry Lester played Jack back then. I do think Peter Bergman was in the role during one of Dina's returns though because I recall some scenes of her with Jess Walton in the role possibly back in the 1990s.
So much fun to be reliving all this nostalgia once again. The magic that can only be done in soaps.

There have been several returns with Dina since Bergman assumed the role, usually short-term stints. I think the last time she appeared was when Katherine died.
I am not a fan of stories that look backward. When I see all the clips, it makes me think we should just watch reruns-- it reminds me how far the show has fallen since Bell's glory days. Anyone can make a story seem interesting by using old material that had high ratings. The challenge is to create compelling new dramas that honor the history and move the story forward. Looking back too much doesn't take the story anywhere. And her paternity has been covered so many times already by other writers (writers since Bell) that it's hardly new territory.

Since I'm a new viewer of Y&R the flashbacks are interesting for me. But usually I don't like them because it feels like filler to me.

The writers are being lazy. Can you imagine if you went to see a major Hollywood movie where the stars were all overpaid and 30% of the movie was flashbacks from earlier movies? You'd feel gipped and probably demand your money back. You'd be like "I've seen this before."
The other thing the producer and writers are not understanding is that people can find lots of clips of these scenes on YouTube and Dailymotion (and probably other online sites). So why would you tune into something that is supposed to be 'new' if you can find this stuff already online?
Plus we're not even addressing the fact that the loyal long-time viewers tend to go for this nostalgia because they have been waiting for years for the show to go back to the way it is, the way they remember it best. But a series of flashbacks is not going to fix current stories or put the show on a path toward a better future.

Yeah I think that was 1990 or '91 when Dina got dumped by that Mark merigeron guy so she was broke and came back to town and tried to get her hooks back into John. But John got wise to her act and dumped her sorry ass and he got back with Jill.

I didn't think they'd ever address Ashley's paternity, and I'm happy.
And I don't mind the flashbacks. All viewers aren't tech savvy -- I'd bet most aren't. They aren't gonna go hunting for old episodes on the internet.

Lol I understand the discussion since I watched this show in the mid 80s-early 90s. I would watch the Price is Right and Donahue and Y and the R was inbetween. I started watching the story when this black cop went undercover as a white guy in a mafia family where the bad guy kept a piranha in a fish tank. So much excitement in Genoa City. What is Cricket up to I wonder.

The problem with Y & R ,they are so limited in flashbacks now...
1.They messed up the history of the characters background ..
2.So much recast for the characters. It 's too confusing for the generation of today why they beloved characters have different actors & some ex actors demand too much money or forbidden the producers to used their faces for flashbacks...Sometimes they wait until they are actual dead in real life, to re-used the flashbacks on some of the actors...
In Terry Lester case, no need permission, but it would leave the Peter Bergman generation very confused, why Jack is different...They rather leave the old clips of Jack storylines out!

When I watch Marla Adams (Dina) act onscreen, I'm mesmerized. How this actress has been ignored by the show THIS many years is mind boggling. Yes there are lots of wrinkles with this actress but somehow the acting shines through them all!
I seriously think Y&R should keep her on as long as the actress wants to continue doing this rather than make this some short stint with Dina. She can help fill the void of Jeanne Cooper being gone.

Yes there are lots of wrinkles with this actress but somehow the acting shines through them all! I seriously think Y&R should keep her on as long as the actress wants to continue doing this rather than make this some short stint with Dina. She can help fill the void of Jeanne Cooper being gone. I agree she's wonderful. But they are making the same mistake with her they made with Jeanne. A woman this age should not have 30 pages of dialogue to memorize three times a week. In all her scenes, she has every other line-- it's her replying to Jack, then her replying to Ashley, then her replying to Graham. All the weight is being put on her. She seems up to it (for now) but it will start to take its toll. During Jeanne's last year or two, you could see she was having slight memory problems with all the dialogue and was probably just ad-libbing at the end. Marla Adams should be used a bit more sparingly-- like have them all reacting to Dina, with the younger ones having more of the dialogue, then bring her in for a few scenes where she sets them straight then goes off to do something, until they start to question her again. She should be in and out. If they use her wisely, then they won't overburden her and run her into the ground like they did with Jeanne. I'd rather see Dina in carefully measured doses for five years, instead of one year where she's driving everything then the actress retires because it's too much for her. The other thing here is that she probably earns a third of what Bergman and Davidson are making. So the responsibility of the scenes should be on them, not on her.

To Jarrod, Do you still watch GH? If so, I really wish you'd join this group: www.themoviedb.org/tv/987-general-hospital/discussIt's very active with opinions, etc and I feel you have a lot to contribute there. The boards here just seem very isolated. Sorry, I tried to send you this by Private Message but the task was blocked saying I could only send messages to staff members. And they wonder why no one comes here.

Thanks for the post. You should have been able to private message me. I will look at the link you provided and register over there. I'll try to use a similar screen name so you know it's me. Are you known as Soapwatch there as well?
