Being a nineties baby, this is one I grew up on and one of the many horror films my older brother showed me behind my parents back. I quite like it. Has some good scares, an interesting premise and story and actually some earnest acting, particularly from Tony Shalhoub. But I also love Matthew Lillard in it as well. Can't believe it actually got really bad reviews They really went out of their way of crafting intricate back stories for each ghosts. I understand it's a remake of a sixties film, but from my understanding, that film was particularly well favored anyways. I'm actually shocked this hasn't been remade again.

I quite liked it too. Matt Lillard was the best part. Of the two movies directed by Steve Beck (the other being Ghost Ship) I prefer this.

It's not as bad as some like Roger Ebert said it was. But the editing is pretty obnoxious. I still like the idea of the movie. And it has some amazing kills in it. Like that idiot lawyer getting sliced in half.

I think there was another thread where this movie was brought up. I saw it a lot back in the day. It was from an era of horror movies that I really didn't like at all. There is clearly a ton of style in those Dark Castle movies from the early 2000s, but it's a style I find extremely annoying. That sort of frenetic editing with the ramped up fast/slow motion effects and the annoying seizure inducing strobiness throughout is just something I find completely irritating. It's not the least bit frightening, or cool, it's just tons substance-less noise and flashiness. There is some cool design work in the movie in the house and the makeup work, but it's all in service of a dumb movie with an annoying tone. The cast is pretty good and some of the effects are great, but it's an overall an unpleasant experience to me.

Haven't seen this in 15 years at least, might dig through my movies and see if I still have it.

I watched the House of Haunted Hill remake--I liked the Rush impersonation of Vincent Price and the idea of the ghost--but the cgi looks dated (although not much else--funny how 20 years made so little difference in cloths and hair style) and even the mini camera wasn't so outdated.
I liked Ghost Ship better but the ship was CGI and often looked it--old fashioned cinematography would have helped this and Haunted Hill.
They light the scenes as if you know 100 people are behind the camera (also a problem I had with Candyman). I haven't seen 13 Ghosts yet.

Saw it when it came out and liked it. Can't remember it much now. Just watched the original, 13 Ghosts (1960) this afternoon.

I went to see both this and Ghost Ship in cinema, didn't like either, from what I remember Ghost Ship was the more watchable one. No idea how their CGI has aged, most likely not well. Like masterofallgoons said, the audiovisual style of movies of that era is not something I'd feel nostalgic for.

Not that *all* the films made in this mold were bad, but I was glad to see this type of film die out in the mid-'00s. Can't say the torture porn trend was better, but it felt like progress at the time.

Dark Castle has a thing for cutting people in half, don't they?

About as scary as an episode of Bewitched, but it has some retro charm, and I admire William Castle for being innovative and wanting to entertain.

Thought this film was a total disaster, but did like Tony Shalhoub.

One of the few things they were good at. This movie seems to be getting reevaluated of late. I hated it when it came out, but maybe I'll give it another go. I do love Matt Lillard.

13 Ghosts was one of my favorites a few years ago. Loved the story to it and the cast. It creeped me out as a viewer through the eyes of Lillard. It would easily be a rewatch for me if on Youtube or HBO Max.
