It's cold, it's dark and you've got exactly ten bucks and enough loose change to cover the tax. Your car has broken down just up the street and your buddy, partner or family member is 3 hours away on their way to collect you. You don't have a credit card with you and it wouldn't matter if you did because we don't accept 'em. What do you choose from the menu at our diner to fill yourself up or maybe blow your tenspot on a cheer-U-up fancy item? Our menu is limited to around 40 items due to slack business in these trying times. But a warm welcome is always here for you. And if our menu doesn't turn you on, there's Aunt Mimi's Roadside Shack fifteen miles east of here but with no transport you're rather stuck with us.

Taxes covered NJtoTX I forgot to mention tips but yes you've got just enough to spare a tip without dipping into your prized ten-spot. Very good juggling of your limited cash there, 10 bucks dead on.

Ah yes enigma72 how are you! Indeed I praised the Po Boy sandwich as one of the Six Best foods I've eaten in the USA, in another thread. I'd go for chicken dumplings (another Best Food on that list, by the way) sausage biscuit (and yet another Six of the Best item!) I'd just have to drink some coffee but sadly that doesn't leave me with quite enough for any desserts. So I'll save the unspent two bucks for a hamburger or piece of chicken just in case I get hungry later while I'm waiting to be rescued!

I would get a hamburger, hot tea and water and leave a generous tip since I was going to be picked up in 3 hours.

I'd get a cheeseburger and one of the pie & ice cream choices. That comes to $5.50... that at least is going to satisfy me as I wait the 3 hours until my ride arrives. If they call and say they're going to be unexpectedly delayed, I'd at least have enough money left to get something else to munch on.
I question the 50¢ for water... most diners and cafes in the U.S. don't charge for a glass of water as long you're getting a meal and you ask for water. But then again, you did specify that this is a desert town, so maybe in desert towns water is something they have to have specially purchased and delivered, in which case the 50¢ charge is perfectly warranted. In any case, I always carry a bottle of water in my car, so I doubt I'd need to buy any at the diner.

My four choices in that order.
1. Shrimp po'boy with a glass of water.
2. Mac and cheese with water and pecan pie.
3. Chicken and dumplings with water and cherry pie.
4.Barbecued half rack baby ribs with home fries and a soft drink.

My first picks would be between a hamburger/cheeseburger, and a Caesar salad. But, it's cold and dark, so I'd go with the warmth of a cheeseburger. Ordinarily, a hamburger is fine with me. But, with the added stress, the cheese is added comfort. ($2:50)
I'd prefer a glass of wine, but it's not on the menu, so I'd be fine with ice tea, or water. ($0.50).
"Ch-ching": $3.00. That would hold me for well more than 3 hours. If my "rescue squad" was very late, I could afford a bit from the breakfast menu, in the morning. I applaud WKM for considering tips for the staff, for being helpful.
(If Aunt Mimi's Roadside Shack offers wine, I'll take a different route, next time.)

Excellent reasoning there divtal with the hot food over cold. Aunt Mimi's place is indeed licensed and we can heartily recommend her Delicate Desert red and Silky Sand Dune white.
