I watched last season late, so I'm glad the new season is so soon.

I don;t think it's being soft and uncritical. I think it attempts a critical narrative based on the information they have from news and gossip. In season 3, I think the Queen is beginning to be painted unfavorably and indications are the family sucks even more in the new season as it involves Princess Di. Now they may go soft on her since everyone goes soft on her.

So far, I’m disappointed. I don’t know who is directing, but I wish he/she would stop with the decrepit posture and creep walking of most of the actors. Is this British upper class thing? And young Diana keeps googling her eyes and lolling her head. In others, they exaggerated the grotesqueness of the characters. Have you ever heard of the term "dowager's hump"?

If you're talking about Prince Philip and Prince Charles, they both do tend to stoop. It seems Prince Philip is just tall and often bent his head because people he was talking to were shorter than him. Prince Charles seems to just have "bad posture." I think it captures Charles' and Diana's mannerisms pretty well. Gillian Anderson is terrific as Margaret Thatcher. A better resemblance to the essence of Thatcher than Meryl Streep's performance in The Iron Lady.

Season 4 might be even more unforgiving in its treatment than some of the other seasons. I don't think anyone could watch season 4 and be left with any sympathy for Prince Charles. They all come across as pretty horrible, actually, with the possible exception of Anne. Elizabeth, at least, comes out looking much better than Margaret Thatcher —but, given how low that particular bar was, what else could one expect? lol

A better resemblance to the essence of Thatcher than Meryl Streep's performance in The Iron Lady. At one point, I thought Anderson was going to fall out of her chair. I can’t remember, but did the real Thatcher act like she’d just had stroke? The only character I liked is the guy who broke into the place. I like Princess Anne. Seems like she's the best of the lot. Edward VIII is (was) the most interesting one though. I knew he was a prick and a borderline Nazi. Now everyone else knows too.
Like some character said in S3, the Windsor's are one extreme or the other. You get the dull as dishwater type. Elizabeth II, George V, George VI, Charles. Or the ones with too much personality. Edward VIII, Margaret, Andrew.
Up to Ep 5. I think they have the true measure of Diana. She's not the saint that people make her out to be. She knew what she was getting into. That she was Option B, that Charles would have married Camilla if he could have. Read a few times that she really didn't love Charles, she loved the Prince of Wales. She was a decent person and an asset to the monarchy (boy did they need one). She wasn't innocent either.

The irony of the tale which the 4th season alludes to is the thing that put that line of Windsors in Buckingham Palace was King Edward abdicating to marry Wallace Simpson. And the queen’s family does everything they can to produce the ideal Christian marriage that the hyper-patriotic like Mrs Thatcher champions. Yet, in the end, the Prince of Wales divorces and marries the woman he loves despite King and Country. In the end, Charles could marry Camilla because he already had the heir and the spare. The Abdication isn't my most knowledgeable area, Edward couldn't marry Wallis Simpson because she insisted on being Queen (Camilla won't be Queen) and she couldn't bear the heir. Had Edward got his way, it would have been mighty interesting in 1939. The King has as much real power in GB as I do but that could have been tested. Could he have done anything to stop Britain declaring war?

It’s the irony of Edward’s whole “the woman I love” thing. It’s that line that ruined Elizabeth’s once normal, though aristocratic, life. What could her life and family have been like just being the King’s niece? Would it have been happier? No doubt. She was 10when the Abdication Crisis hit. She had already come to terms with the fact that she was a royal but probably not going to get the throne. "Uncle David" didn't have kids but it could be assumed that he would (he didn't). I've heard the story of her and Margaret wanting to swap places. Not only putting her on the throne, but the Abdication killed her father. He wasn't planning on being King. Add to that the well known stutter problem. Everything I've read about George VI says that he smoked himself to death.
George VI was a good man. Read a story once about Eisenhower giving a briefing about Overlord. Churchill was there and George showed up. It was very warm and Ike suggested taking off their coats. He noticed Churchill turning pale but everyone agreed. Ike noticed that, while his jacket was immaculate, the King's shirt was in tatters. he asked Churchill after and he told Eisenhower that the King and Queen haven't bought new clothes since September, 1939.

I was watching the real interview with Charles and Diana and it's pretty similar. I think the big difference is height. The show Diana is shorter so she has to look up more. I think they have the mannerisms down myself.

That's interesting. I'd always heard it described as propaganda and the creator a self-proclaimed "royalist". It seemed even the royals themselves like season 1 but there was a turn somewhere. Maybe Peter Morgan was playing the long con.

Who would have thought that Prince Edward comes up with my favorite line of the series When Charles calls Andrew, on his wedding day a "fringe" member of the monarchy, Andrew asks "did he really say that?" and Ed replies "That was impressively cunty"

Maybe Peter Morgan was playing the long con. it would be the worst propaganda ever. However it isn’t overly nasty either. It does a good job of imagining what the reality is. It’s not going to hide affairs and whatnot but it isn’t going to have Prince Charles twirling a mustache and going mwahahahaha! either.
