and got way too excited that I could read it. It said Абсолют Юк "Absolut Uk[raine]."
Why's it so surprising that an Asian person could read that?

Beats me. The Mongolians use Cyrillic if I'm not mistaken. Maybe the guy has just led a sheltered life.

Unless you're from Siberia it's rather rare. I've fooled some Russians into believing I'm one of their own, until I give myself away with я из китая (I'm from China) or by not understanding them when they ask a question in Russian. I suppose the Russophone sphere is geographically and ethnically large enough that certain speakers have only met white counterparts while others know Asian ones, etc. The former USSR is a lot more diverse than the West thinks.

Oh, I know there are plenty of indigenous Asian peoples in Russian Siberia. I mean the descendants of Genghis Khan and Attila didn't just walk off the face of the earth. Not many people in the West are learning Russian though.
You can even see the Mongolian features in many European Russians.
I could tell my bf was Russian from when I first saw him because of his Asian-ish face, and he is in fact mixed. Other Slav ethnicities like Ukrainian and Polish are more European-looking. Maybe I'll gift him a 23andMe DNA test.

A couple of times at the hockey games, I have seen a fan wear a team Russia jersey. The name on the back is spelled out in the Cyrillic alphabet.
I was excited that I could read the player's name. One had an Alexei Yashin jersey, and the other had an Igor Larionov jersey.
When I was first following the team, I was taking Introduction to Russian. We had one player on the team from Russia. So, on an index card, I wrote out his name is Cyrillic.
I showed it to him, and I asked "Is that close?" He said I got it exactly!
He autographed the back of the card for me.
