I absolutely do believe that it is.
Unfortunately for some of us and definitely for me, competition plays a huge part in getting the world to move forward.
I've hated competition starting at a very early age. I vividly recall the first week of 2nd grade where I purposefully missed two words on a spelling test because I had the distinct impression that getting A's in school would make me stand out in a way that I didn't want.
It seems there's no two ways around it.
Thoughts?

No, not in every case. Competition can motivate people to do better than they would otherwise.

No, not in every case. Competition can motivate people to do better than they would otherwise. That's a very nice way to look at it.

It's a very big topic so it's hard to generalize. In nature sure, competing for limited resources and predators killing off prey are both obviously hostile. When it comes to people and money, competition can be bad if those competing for the most wealth disregard those with less wealth than themselves but businesses competing can improve the quality of products and allow consumers to pay less money for similar goods. Of course, there's outsourcing and there's planned obsolescence since businesses have gotten too greedy. Technologically it can be a very good thing when it leads to new inventions. In team sports half the teams will always have a winning season and half losing so it doesn't really get anybody anywhere overall. Militarily, well I don't know what to say. In some circumstances it may be inevitable, but it shouldn't be a normal state of affairs with a large part of the economy based on it.

Inherently hostile? No, but in many cases it is hostile.
Life is a competition of sorts, especially considering the ego and nature. Everything in nature competes to survive.

I'd use inevitably. It may start out in good fun but in time, someone's getting decapitated.
