Got this a few weeks back at Dollar Tree for literally $1. Lot of Japanese movies there, and for that price you figure nothing great, nothing spectacular, etc., a few days ago the same movie pops up on an MSN list of greatest ghost movies, so I watched it last night and this morning. Lot of people say it's the scariest movie they've ever seen...it's definitely creepy, but I just didn't have that reaction to it, it's good though.
Anybody else's thoughts?

I've only watched the American remake and it's sequels... So can't really comment. But I'm always pleased finding a decent movie at the Dollar store...
Aside from Hallmark movies or random older movies. (Which don't get me wrong... Can be fun.)

Haven't seen it, but I know the Japanese original is pretty well regarded. That's a good find for a dollar store, especially if there were any special features, which I doubt there were, but still.

Don't know about features but for a dollar, you get the kind of trailers you can't fast forward, skip or otherwise go straight to menu from.

Aside from its thick atmosphere of dread and a few set-pieces involving the shadow people. I remember not finding it particularly engaging and somewhat overlong. Where the story/script was heavily entrenched in its themes of isolation and technology. Very cold and sterile.
Only saw it the once, and that was when it was released and rather hyped. So who knows, my opinion might change after all these years?

Actually I just picked this up at Dollar Tree... heh. I enjoyed it. But could see some of it's limitations due to the budget.
Interesting to compare it to the 2006 movie. While the 2006 movie has it's issues (A ton was cut out of the runtime. Lots of behind the scenes issues. )
It has a faster pace... Amped up effects... and feels more modern. Despite being filmed just 5 years later.
But it's missing out on the social context of it's Tokyo setting.... Certain characters are changed or swapped in lieu of the remake.
Plus using Romania as Columbus, Ohio is just funny. The 2006 version is heavy on jump scares. The original is heavy on a brooding desolate atmosphere.
I enjoyed both versions despite their issues.

The word that I think comes to mind is claustrophobic, it's not unusual to see footage of Japan with crowds of people, and in this movie there were usually only 1-2 people in a scene, sometimes 3, but almost never more than that. It's already like 'where is everybody?' even before all the disappearances.
