I saw the thread title and I thought "great, ANOTHER movie with forced diversity casting". Good to know that in this case there is a very good reason for the presence of a black actor in a movie that takes place in Victorian-era England.

Without knowing all the historical facts, it is possible that there were certain hierarchies among groups of people on the African continent. The higher ups used the lower ones, they were the ones who ended up on slave ships.
