There have been Godfather books written after Puzo's death that have kept the storyline going. I read one which featured the sad death of Tom Hagen. I would imagine films could be produced based on these books, though I'm hoping this is all just a crappy idea. I’d be down for Robert Duvall as Tom Hagen The death of Tom Hagen If I remember correctly, Hagen is murdered by an opposing Family, who convince him that it is Michael Corleone ordering the hit, which was not true. Hagen is tied up inside of a running car inside of a locked garage, where eventually the fumes kill him. Knowing he is about to die, Hagen thinks back of the first meal that Mama Corleone made for him when Sonny took him off the streets, which comforts him as he dies. It was a pretty effective passage in the story.
