They're owned by AT&T, and they want you to stream everything.

Well with the theaters, I believe the movie companies still have to give them a percentage of the ticket revenue. Going this route they can just get rid of them altogether and don't have to pay them anything.

They're not killing theaters per se. The movies are still being released in international markets that don't have HBO Max. Also, there is no pathway to seeing movie theaters in North America returning back to pre-COVID attendance. Third, they stand to lose millions if they don't release them in some way.
Since they own HBO Max, they get to retain most of the money from the subscription fees. Whereas with a traditional theatrical distribution, the box office gross is split between the theater and the studio.

Why would anyone think Time Warner cares about movie theaters more than itself?
Further Time Warner is owned by ATT so their business model now would be closer to Netflix and subscriber revenue/growth than box office.
This is all moot since people who are wanting to see a movie in theaters will be able to do so.

Nolan & Warner tried to help theaters with Tenet and it didn't work. The public overall is not interested in going to the theater in this climate including myself. There is no reason for Time Warner to think about the theaters over it's own survival and yet it's still releasing the films day and date. To be clear I think this is very much a test to see if this model works, but right now it's pretty much the only thing that will work.

Those of us who love going to the theater still have that option for now, but with diminishing returns at the BO, theaters will be in serious trouble.

Agreed it's probably the best option during covid, and it's the perfect time to test this business model. But if it's successful there's no going back, and other studios will follow suit, leaving theaters hung out to dry. I suppose we've been headed in this direction for a while now, with covid only expediting the process. Still going to be sad if/when 'going out to the movies' isn't a part of our culture anymore.

Those of us who love going to the theater still have that option for now, but with diminishing returns at the BO, theaters will be in serious trouble. Or they wouldn't go see the movie anyway and wait the 6 to 12 months for the release on HBO or Max. IMO, this is a demand issue. I do not think for one second that Warner wants to miss a 100 million BO opening weekend. I think theaters need to adjust. Most screens are crappy. The Imax and custom larger screens and sound will survive since those are the only ones that can compete with 4k TV's now. So instead of a 15 screen multiplex, they need to become a five screen Imax with a higher price point....Or rip out every other seat for the normal screens and install a better ventilation system. Then there will still be the independent theaters. The positive to this is that HBO customers are clueless about HBO Max. They have huge base of people that can get it, but they don't know it or they have Roku's and don;t want to switch for some reason (I think Roku is going to settle the feud though.). They should be the #2 or 3 streaming service and they may not even be top five. So a relatively small group of people have access to the movies even though they are easily accessible for everyone.

No one is buying WB and or merging anytime soon, AT&T just merged with them . Paramount used to be on top and now struggling , WB may not be far behind with poor management on top.

I don’t get why people think this is the death of theaters. There’s still people who love the big screen experience, but there’s also gonna be people who want to just stay home and watch the movie. This is a win win for both streaming and theaters in my opinion.

Maybe Warner feels this move will help take some control from Disney.

There are those like me that prefer real stores, but the masses will always chose convenience over all else, at any cost. This is absolutely going to kill theaters.

I can’t believe we are seriously talking about a future without big screen movies. What a god damn dystopia this is world is becoming.
