Maybe Warner feels this move will help take some control from Disney. That makes me wonder what exactly has. In any event, I think Disney will overtake the streaming market even from Netflix as soon as Disney+ is international. Their catalogue is the one everyone with at least one kid wants plus they will continue to churn out MCU movies and reboots even if Star Wars wanes for a few years.

It was inevitable, honestly the movie going experience has limped along for years being carried by the studios dumping all their money into making tentpole movies. The cinema chains were always able to hold leverage by saying "if you release this 50million movie straight to streaming, we won't show your 250million movie in our theaters", that leverage is gone now. Tenet crawled to a $57million domestic gross over the course of months and the rest of the tentpoles just got pulled. Regal shuttered their doors, many Cinemarks around the midwest are only open on weekends where they see a handful of attendance per day. Maybe Avatar 2 will be the movie that brings everyone back, but it's certainly not going to be Wonder Woman, No Time To Die, Dune, Black Widow or the Suicide Squad. WB is right to call the theater chains bluff, they have HBO Max and AMC has a rewards card. It sucks, but this is reality.

They want to create more interest in their streaming service HBO Max, which is not getting as many subscribers as, say, a Disney+.
