based on Stephen King's book with a screenplay by William Goldman (The Princess Bride) and directed by Rob Reiner (Stand By Me, The Princess Bride). Considered one of the very best King adaptations. Perfectly blending thrills with dark humor. Kathy Bates rightfully won an Oscar for her portrayal of Annie Wilkes, creating one of cinema's most memorable villains. She perfectly switches between sweet and flat out crazy. James Caan may have seemed like an odd choice for the lead role of Paul Sheldon but he was only cast because every other major male actor in Hollywood turned the film down. Caan does a great job however and gets us to feel for his character.

Loved Bates in this. One of my most unfavorite books of King's, and I watched the movie only beacuse of Bates.

James Caan may have been an odd choice for the role? You weren't going to get Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, George Clooney or Matthew McConaughey tied to a bed and tortured by Kathy Bates if that's what you and others were wanting. James did well in the role.

Does anyone what Stephen King thought about it? I know he hated Kubricks "Shining" film, so I'm curious what he thought about this one.

Just saying a former athlete who played a lot of tough guy roles doesn’t seem like the immediate choice for a period romance novelist and as I mentioned he only got the role after about 20 other actors turned it down. Still like I said, he is good in the movie and is convincing

Superb thriller. I don't think there could have been another actress who could play Annie better than Kathy Bates. Just an amazing performance. But I would like to add that Richard Farnsworth was perfect as Buster, the kindly gentleman sheriff. That's a great performance that rarely gets any praise.

Yeah I really liked the sheriff and the wife. I feel like I could watch a show about the two of them solving crimes

Rewatched it last night. Holds up. Bates and Caan are both excellent. Forgot about this scene.

Well considering Pitt, Clooney and McConaghey weren't even really blips on the radar at the time, no shit.

Excellent film.
As great as Kathy Bates was, I think James Caan really made the film work. His performance was fantastic, very understated where he could have gone over the top. Bates was already over the top, Caan's more mellow turn balanced it out perfectly.
I think it's probably James Caan's best work, and that says a lot because the guy was Santino Corleone in a different movie. 😉

I can't think of anyone that would have been better than Cathy Bates at the time. Maybe Glenn Close?
