Can't have it, I'm allergic. Before I developed an allergy, I could it it but wasn't a big fan, I liked boiled shrimp that you just peel and eat and I liked big fantail shrimp stuffed with crab meat.

I do love shrimp cocktail, although I've never made the sauce. It's my favorite appetizer in restaurants. And, on the few occasions that I've had it at home, I've used bottled sauce.
I keep a bag of medium-size shrimp in the freezer, for a quick dinner of Scampi. And, I should will try making my own sauce. Horseradish isn't my favorite flavoring, but I do like it in shrimp cocktail.

Thanks, Nuts. I've not seen St. Elmo sauce. I'll look for it.

love it! In high school we would have field trips to San Francisco's fisherman's wharf. For $1 you could get a shrimp cocktail. Those were the days! For me, I felt less sauce was better as I loved the taste of the shrimp!

Yep, but depends on the sauce. If it's just ketchupy, I'll just have the shrimp. And I may need to add hot sauce or cayenne, anyway.

Never had it. What we do is boil the shrimp, put it in a pan with melted butter and bread crumbs, bake it for 10 minutes, and then I load my down with ketchup, and my parents use a shrimp sauce my dad makes. That's what we refer to as shrimp scampi.

mrsunshine's mother always made her own cocktail sauce. It was just ketchup and horseradish. It was always too spicy for me, so I just added more ketchup. We would have boiled shrimp and salad, sometimes baked potatoes a couple times a year. It usually came down to me peeling all of the shrimp because I was faster than everyone else. I never minded. I didn't like to see them all struggle. I love boiled shrimp, but any kind of shrimp is fine with me!

nutsberryfarm π When I have shrimp I make sure whoever is eating it has both cocktail sauce and melted butter to choose from. I eat both but prefer butter. What I do is melt butter in a bowl in the microwave. Then to keep it warm I have one of these: I add salt and pepper to the butter. Outstanding!

Iβm allergic too. And as a result I avoid a lot of different seafoods. I tried crab a few years back and was fine. Iβm still hesitant to try lobster though. Are you only allergic to shrimp or are there other shellfish you canβt have?

Oh. Does it include mollusks like clam and squid? Or just crustaceans: lobster, crab? yes it includes clams, octopus, squid etc., I also have a fish allergy but its not as dangerous and I do eat Caesar salad and Caesar dressing does have anchovies in it. I developed this allergy while vacationing on Sanibel Island when I was about 37, I just thought I ate some bad shrimp _ I got hives around my mouth, an itchy throat and a rash and felt sick the rest of the time we were on Sanibel Island. When we got home we went to a "Shrimp boil" a few weeks later and I got sick again. Doctor said I was lucky that the symptoms weren't worse but said they would get worse, I asked should I take Benedril but he said No- just don't eat the stuff.

The worst part can be people who donβt understand. I actually avoid going to Chinese restaurants with certain people because they always order shrimp and dishes can be cross contaminated. One year I went to a Chinese place with my family for my birthday and half of them ordered shrimp dishes! On my birthday! The inconsiderate jerks!

Some people don't know how dangerous food allergies can be and think its "cute" to sneak things in other people's food.
