Ellen Barkin (April 16, 1954, Aries, New York City, New York, USA)
It's said that one of cinema's enduring myths is that Ellen Barkin played a guitar player in Lou Adler's influential stoner comedy 'Up in Smoke' (1978). Her official screen acting debut might have been in James Goldstone's historical television drama 'Kent State' (1981), a film about the Kent State shootings which took place during a student protest in Ohio in 1970. The film was co-produced by filmmaker Wes Craven who was from Cleveland, Ohio.
In a rare occurrence, Craven was later invited to film inside the White House by President William Jefferson Clinton, a move which some sections of the American press dubbed a "nightmare on Pennsylvania Avenue". Clinton planned to screen the documentary footage at a new archive being established at a presidential library in Arkansas (in 2004, the William J. Clinton Library and Museum was opened in Little Rock).
Barkin's big break in theatrical features came when she was cast alongside young hopefuls Steve Guttenberg, Daniel Stern, Mickey Rourke, Paul Reiser, Kevin Bacon and Timothy Daly in Barry Levinson's seriocomic drama 'Diner' (1982), the first installment in Levinson's 'Baltimore Tetraology'.
