Raspberries reach historic lows for this time of seasonwww.producebluebook.com/2020/12/21/produceiq-slow-demand-leads-to-lowest-produce-prices-in-10-years/Restrictions on foodservice in the major metropolitan markets, along with retailer cautiousness, tilted holiday prices into the buyers’ favor. Overall, the industry’s rolling 4-week movement is down 8.2 percent and total sales by -10.1 percent year over year. Week #50, which is the 2nd week after Thanksgiving, began an even more dramatic decline over last year’s activity. Anecdotally, the lack of orders was widespread last week as well. ProduceIQ Index: $0.86 /pound, +3.6 percent over prior week Week #51 ending December 18th Blue Book has teamed with ProduceIQ BB #:368175 to bring the ProduceIQ Index to its readers. The index provides a produce industry price benchmark using 40 top commodities to provide data for decision making. High freight rates contribute towards lower F.O.B. prices through the holiday shopping season. Tomatoes, however, made significant gains. As a silver lining to low grower F.O.B. prices, tomatoes increased 39 percent on light supply. Grape tomatoes led the category, reaching $1.61/pound. However, these prices may be short-lived as Nogales, AZ, crossings have yet to ramp up. Increases in the Mexican tomato supply is anticipated through the end of the month and into January.

I've purchased many raspberries at Publix for 99 cents a carton but nothing else in the produce department is cheap. I noticed the raspberries were from Peru and they were very good. Wish they would carry black raspberries one day. I bought a bag of shredded lettuce on Sunday, it used to be 98 cents a bag but I had to pay 2.79, I didn't want to buy it but WKD wants chicken fajita salad tomorrow made with shredded lettuce, I'll end up throwing out half the bag becuase it doesn't keep. I couldn't find Roma tomatoes so I just bought a small vine ripened tomato.

I WISH that produce prices were lower. We have reached 5.99 for cauliflower, 3.99 for a head of lettuce (and its mostly "air" rather than solid core), $2 for an English cucumber. Over $2/lb for apples that we grow in Ontario. You can't find roasts (Thanks for the fact that it' the holidays and some was brought in/cut up/prepared). Prices have gone up here, and they're expected to go up again another 25% in the year ahead. On top of it all, it's usually poor quality even in the premium supermarkets. Or else has been "trimmed" to hide the poor quality (for example, chard with very little stalk - so mostly leaves) Prices didn't really go down in the summer either when our own local produce came in. sigh.
