I had some beets in the crisper that lasted over a year .... I do tend to forget they are there because they are low priority veggies and are buried under the carrots... Carrots which seem to depend on how much ventilation is in the bag... too much and too little are both fatal to crispness. Cucumbers have a short lifespan no matter where they reside.

True.
For me, it's partially a matter of out-of-sight-out-of-mind. I rarely use celery, and don't buy it often. But, it's only sold in whole "heads," while most recipes call for a stalk, or two. So, it goes into the crisper, and is often discarded in liquid form.
I keep onions in a counter-top produce basket, until some of it is cut up. A good plastic wrap (I like Costco's), will hold in aroma. So, I keep the left-over onion on the 'fridge shelf, where I can see it, to keep track of what I have on hand.
"Crisper drawers," are more like hiding places.

I bought 5, cut it up, blanched it for 3 minutes and it's in the freezer .. ready to be used by the handfull where ever and whensver. 5 Stalks makes a LOT of cut up celery ! I keep freshly cut up onions in the fridge in a dedicated tupperware container with a reliable lid.

My top crisper drawer is for veggies, and though I make a lot of salads, it can go unopened for a few days and then things start yellowing, wilting, or sliming.
Bottom drawer is just for things with far-off dates, apples, oranges, and maybe avocados. Coffee creamer, bacon or sausage, etc. Sometimes I miss dates as well there.
I put cut onion in the butter compartment on the door, and cut avocado. I don't use butter.

Catman puts cheese in those things. Wow, Catman. That's a much more reasonable use for them! I have much more cheese, than I have rotting veggies. For my new year kitchen resolution, I'm going to do some serious changes to my 'fridge.

I learned the hard way about carrots and apples ... lost an entire season's crop of carrots Now I use the BIG fridge for general veggies and the apples live in the 1/2 fridge in the basement. The carrots froze there and I don't trust the temp ... the apples aren't for all winter storage and seem more forgiving tempwise.

I discovered that keeping my apples (temporarily) out on the patio (on the BBQ grill) wasn't the best idea - after Mr. Squirrel swiped one and ate half of another. Celery will keep longer if you wrap it tightly with aluminum foil - or better yet, keep it submerged in water.

Wow. My crisper drawers are full. One for veggies, one for fruit. Don't store greens in them though because they wilt. Out on a shelf where they can be seen and used. Lettuce, tomatoes, carrots, radishes and cukes in one. Fruit in the other. Celery on the bottom shelf next to the bagged milk.
One trick is to put paper towel on the bottom to absorb liquid.
