Not a whole lot of popular films that take place on New Year's Eve, even horror or thriller films. But End of Days still remains one of my favorite. There's some dumb cheesy and hokey pokey religious stuff in it, but I really like Peter Hyams direction and his dark and gritty cinematography, and the imagery, Gabriel Brynes is having a blast playing Satan, and I think it's one of Arnie's better performance as a human character rather than an action hero. In the same vain as Predator, it gives you everything you like about Arnold, but really deconstructs it.

It always felt to me like it was another kind of movie and then Arnold got involved and it became kind of a dumb action movie. But it's kind of a fun one for that kind of thing. Also, Kevin Pollack's character is named Bobby Chicago, and that's hilarious. And Arnold's name is Jericho Caine which is a funny, dumb name but also sounds like Jerry Cocaine when you say it quickly.

I watched End of Days last night as a "New Year's Eve movie". It's dumb, over-produced, overblown, but I still like it very much and it's irresistible fun. Probably the best performance by Arnie as an alcoholic hero, and Gabriel Bryne is a suave Satan. It's Rosemary's Baby meets Commando.

I think I saw it again, back during the October Horror Challenge in 2017. Anyway, I think the film certainly had lots of potential, specially the whole horror/post-apocalyptic (well, pre-apocalyptic maybe?) feel and look to it, and also where Arnold portrays a very dark performance, at least compared to some of the much lighter films he had done before. But considering that he had just gone through an open heart surgery, and having read his biography, I think he said that several people did look at him in another way, after the operation. As he was no longer seen as this "unbeatable machine" and where some felt he might no longer be suited to keep on doing action roles, because of his heart condidition, and so, several of his planned and upcoming movie projects, were either changed or terminated.
Still, with the late 90s/early 00s "trilogy" of End Of Days, The 6th Day and Collateral Damage, he seemed to move for far more dramatic or emotional parts, but where it felt like the writers or director was afraid that his new serious image, would not go down to well with his action-fans, so they decided to throw in the classic one-liners/over-the-top action sequences as well, and sadly, it made specially End of Days and Collateral Damage, a bit too uneven at times.
Speaking of Gabriel Byrne. That opening scene, is well, BAD ASS:
