It's sitting at $453 Million right now, with 1 full weekend in the states, 1 full weekend in China & the UK, and 2 full weekends in the rest of the world. It's projected for a 50-55% drop in the states, and in many countries it is already hitting the total box office of the first film. That film ended with $773 Million worldwide.
So, where does GOTG2 end up?
I've been mulling over the figures, comparing the first weekend % drops, % of foreign contribution, opening box office, etc, with a number of MCU films, and I'm going to set the over under at $955 Million.

I read that earlier and I don't see what the problem is. So we know a movie like Guardians can get near a billion. It doesn't change anything if it gets to 980 or actually tips over. It's basically the same. A billion isn't some magical marker. We still know that Guardians can make roughly that much either way.
And then what's the problem? Nobody thinks WW is a failure if it makes 800. Thor should probably do about that sure.
So I don't see his point as meaning much of anything. He seems to think the comic film industry making more money is a bad thing.
Doesn't it just mean that these movies are becoming more and more mainstream?

Doesn't exist in a vacuum though. A lot of its (domestic) take will be predicated heavily on how well or poorly Alien 5 (technically 6) and Pirates 12 (or however many) gross at the box office, as well. Looking at this page it seems the first Guardians benefited from the company of a rather soft bunch of contemporaries, seized the opportunity, and smashed expectations to smithereens. No reason to think this one won't do the same, or hasn't already by certain standards. But, then, you've gotta ask -- beyond Memorial Day weekend -- how many viewers can Wonder Woman peel off, even if only for a week or two depending on word of mouth? As polarized as it seems here at times the fact of the matter is that, among casual fans looking for something fun to watch for a couple hours, there's definitely some overlap between DC and Marvel. So you've that, too. As I see it if things break extremely favorably for Guardians 2 (Pirates tanks, Aliens does middling numbers, Wonder Woman underperforms and receives unfavorable reviews, etc.) the $955m is attainable, I think, though it would be at the higher end of my personal estimates. If some or all of the aforementioned factors or other elements cut the legs out from under it, then maybe -- what, $800-850m, still? Edited to add: oh, my bad: so, therefore: under, is my guess.
